Description	:	SARAH TURNER CAIN CALDWELL (1806-1886) was born January 21, 1806, near Cain’s Sulphur Springs in York County, South Carolina, a daughter of Hugh M. M. Cain (1770-1839) and Martha Turner Allison Cain (1781-1860), the latter being a daughter of Revolutionary War patriot Robert Allison, Esq. In 1830 at the age of twenty-five, Sarah, also known as Sally, was married to forty-three-year-old James Caldwell of the Beersheba neighborhood. William (1831-1843), died at the age of twelve; Martha Catherine (1833-1884), married John Rufus Starr Meek and moved to Arkansas; Robert Allison (1834-1916), married Jane Catherine Adams; Agnes (1837-1838), died in the first year of her age; Nancy (1839-1839), died at the age of four weeks; Margaret Ann (1840-1919), married 1st John Meek McElwee and 2nd Newman McElwee; Hugh Gibson (1842-1865), died in the War Between the States; William (1844-1908), married 1st Elizabeth Campbell and 2nd Nancy Caldwell, a second cousin; and Nancy (1847-1876), married Thomas Jason Thompson and moved to Arkansas. At nine o’clock on the morning of Thursday, July 1, 1886, at the age of eighty, Sarah Turner Cain Caldwell died at her York County home. This strong-willed matriarch was loved and revered by her family. Her obituary said of her: “She was a handsome woman, a woman of fine intellect, gentle and refined in her manner, true and loyal to her friends, a faithful and devoted wife, a loving and kind mother and a sincere friend and helpful neighbor… Truly it could be said of her, ‘she looketh well to the ways of her household and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up and call her blessed’.” Contributed by Robert Allison Ragan, a great-great grandson and family historian.
