They appear in Canada West, Cramahe Township, Northumberland County, New Castle District where they were married on July 1, 1849,in the M. E. Church by Rev. Joshua Webster. They appear in Canada West, Cramahe Township, Northumberland County, New Castle District where they were married on July 1, 1849,in the M. E. Church by Rev. Joshua Webster. (Joseph Palmateer and Loretta Puffer are shown as witnesses on their certificate.) They appear in the 1851 Census in Cramahe, Northumberland Co., West Canada. They are listed as Ephraim and Katherine and have a 1-year old boy, Willard. Ephraim is a laborer, and they are W. Methodists. They are the correct ages, and Willard is listed elsewhere as the child of Ephraim and Sarah Cornelius. Next door in the census are William and Carolin Dingman, and their sons Wm B and Jared ages 6 & 4. Carolin was formerly Carolin Cornelius. There is also a Palmateir family and another Dingman family next. All neighbors are E.B. Methodists. This is on Page 83 (printed) or 43 (hand-written). They had their child James on Feb. 20, 1854 in Cramahe, Canada, according to Sarah's Civil War pension application. They moved to St. Clair Co, Michigan, United States, where their next child, Mary Melissa, was born on Jan. 15, 1856. They moved to Hudson Township, La Porte Co, Indiana, where Samual (father of Lillie Cornelius Roland) was born on Dec. 12, 1859, and where they appear in the 1860 U.S. Census. Ephraim and Sarah report that they both were born in Canada. Shortly after immigrating to the U.S. from Canada, on August 1, 1862, Ephraim enlisted at La Porte Co, IN, in Company B, Regiment 73 of the Indiana Volunteers to serve three years or during the war, and mustered into service as a private on Aug. 16, 1862. He died of disease while fighting for the Union in a military hospital #19 in or around Nashville, TN. He left Sarah with three small children. Sarah married John Lane on Oct. 24, 1866, in St. Joseph Co, IN. They had three children, George, William and Ralph in about 1868, 1870, and 1873 respectively. Sarah and John appear in the 1880 U.S. Census in Hudson Twp, La Porte Co, IN. Their three youngest children are living with them. The Census shows that both of Sarah's parents were born in Canada. Sarah's husband John died after 1880. The next record shows Sarah marrying Charles W. Newcomb on May 5, 1892, in St. Joseph Co, IN. A marriage announcement appears in the South Bend Weekly Newspaper, "Charles W. Newcomb and Sarah A. Lane, a blushing pair from New Carlisle, were married here last Thursday. The ceremony occurred about 11 o'clock at the office of Justice Wright, on Washington Street, that functionary officiating. The groom was 66 and the bride 63. They were very smiling and happy." Sarah and Charles appear in the 1900 U.S. Census in Olive Twp, St. Joseph Co, IN, page 124. On this census, Sarah reports that her father was born in New York and her mother in Pennsylvania. She is 72 years old. Living nearby (on same page of census report) is Sarah's oldest child, James Cornelius age 49, his wife, Mary age 49, and three daughters ages 12 and 9 (twins). Sarah Palmateer Cornelius Lane Newcomb died on March 1, 1905. An announcement in the newspaper states, "The funeral of Mrs. Charles Newcomb was held at the Christian Church last week Thursday, Rev. R. L. Wisler officiating. Internment was in the New Carlisle cemetery."
