Description	:	Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 12 at West Prairie Lutheran Church in Lennox for Sarah Ann Poppens, 82, who died Friday morning, Feb. 8, 2008 at Pioneeer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, SD. Officiating during the service was the Rev. Erika Lehmann. Helen Sweeter was organist. Rev. Erika Lehmann sang "The Lord's Prayer". Pallbearers were Dean Forbes, Dix Johnke, Ron Poppens, Gary Poppens, David Poppens, Marlin Poppens, Larry Poppens, and Michael Poppens. Interment was held in the Lennox Cemetery. Sarah Ann Johnke was born in Lennox on Oct. 20, 1925, the daughter of Frank J. and Louise (Bultena) Johnke. She moved to the farm with her parents where she attended Rose Cottage Rural School. She attended Lennox High School, graduating with the class of 1943. At 17 years of age she began teaching rural school, which she continued for five years. On May 28, 1948 she was united in marriage to Harold Poppens at her parental home in Lennox. They moved to their farm southeast of Lennox where they lived their entire married life. Her death ended marriage of over 59 years. Sarah Ann was a member of West Prairie Lutheran Church and was active in WELCA. She was a member of Progress Extension Club and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed counter cross stitch embroidery and crafts. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by an infant daughter: Lissa Lea Poppens; two half-brothers: William Johnke and Francis (Fritz) Johnke; one son-in-law, Marvin (Skip) Hotchkiss. Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Harold; three children: Dr.Clifford (Faye) Poppens of Cadiz, KY, Heidi Hotchkiss of Ashville, NC and Marcy (David) Parker of Chapel Hill, NC; eight grandchildren: Sarah, Emily, Alan, Emma, Jacob, Olivia, Alys and Anna; one half-brother, Harold Johnke in Arizona; plus several nieces and nephews.
