Description	:	Mrs. Sarah Smalley There passed away in St. Mary's hospital, Camrose, on Saturday morning, December 27, at 7:25 a.m., a well-known and highly respected Camrose resident in the person of Mrs. Sarah Smalley. Mrs. Smalley was born in Adams county, Ohio, on the third of [December], 1860, and was 81 years of age. In her 'teens she became the wife of George Elmore. There were two children--Bertha (Mrs. Howard Fox of Dayton, Ohio) who died in 1914, and Dr. E. H. Elmore of Rupert, Idaho, who was injured quite seriously in an automobile mishap earlier this year. ... Mrs. Smalley was born in Adams county, Ohio, on the third of [December], 1860, and was 81 years of age. In her 'teens she became the wife of George Elmore. There were two children--Bertha (Mrs. Howard Fox of Dayton, Ohio) who died in 1914, and Dr. E. H. Elmore of Rupert, Idaho, who was injured quite seriously in an automobile mishap earlier this year. She was bereaved within three years. Her second marriage took place in 1882 to Theodore H. Smalley, whose death occurred in 1919. The family was resident in the Vegreville district at the time and Rev. Mr. Campbell had charge of the funeral service. A few years later, in 1927, Mrs. Smalley bought a small property in Camrose and had resided here ever since. The members of the Smalley family are: Etta (Mrs. Bangs), resident in Montana; Raymond of Calgary; Roy of Long Beach, Calif.; Grace (Mrs. R. E. Lawrence), Edmonton; Milton of Vancouver; and Carey of Victoria. With Mrs. Smalley at the time of her death were Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. Raymond Smalley, the latter having come up from Calgary. Mr. Smalley came from Ft. Nelson by 'plane; he is engaged in construction work on the new airplane base at that point. Relatives who were unable to be present at the funeral were Roy of Long Beach, Milton (on active army service), Vancouver, and Dr. Elmore of Idaho. Mrs. Smalley was a member of one of the pioneer families of Ohio, her father, Ellison Mahaffey, having been chiefly instrumental in the erection of the Baptist church which served the community in its early days, and is still standing, a monument to the independence, religious conviction and industry of the people of that era. Like many of the pioneer homes it was built from timber hewed out of the virgin forest, and its fine hand-made furnishings are also a silent testimonial to the place this centre of worship occupied in their lives. One of Mrs. Smalley's hobbies was the collecting of all manner of interesting and informative items, ranging from humor to theology and science, and these she had over a long period of years transferred to a huge scrap book. Until advancing age made it necessary for her to assume light tasks only, she loved working in her vegetable and flower garden. Following the outbreak of war she had done a considerable amount of knitting for the Red Cross. Mrs. Smalley leaves nineteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
