Marvel Is the Price Of Tragedy Upon Street Last Tuesday Night. One of the most shocking tragedies of the year occurred on the streets of Aurora at ten o'clock Tuesday night, when one of the James Broadbent taxis, which was being driven by Mr. Broadbent himself, struck Mrs. W.P. Marvel, aged and well known woman of this city and which resulted in her death three hours later, or at about one o'clock Wednesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Marvel, who live in the east part of the city, had attended the revival meeting at the Christian church (sic) and were on their way home when the terrible accident happened. The old couple, when they reached the southwest corner of the square, at the Gunnarson & Call office, walked across the street and continued eastward on the paving, instead of crossing over to the sidewalk. They had frequently done this before. They were walking well out on the pavement, near where the brick and asphalt sections meet. At a point north of the Holm grocery they came to the car of L.A. Enderle, which was parked at that spot and fronting the curb about the court house square. They were nearer the rear of the car than the front, so the old folks, passed around the car at the rear, which took them well into the street and into the regular path of traffic westbound. At the same instant James Broadbent, coming west from the Burlington station with two passengers in his taxi, was driving west on this side of the stree (sic), which was the proper place on the street. As Mr. and Mrs. Marvel emerged from the Enderle car the husband caught a glimpse of the approaching taxi and hurried out of the way, thinking in the instant only of time he had that the wife was moving with him, he being slightly in advance of her. Instead, however, the aged woman in her confusion stepped the other way and immediately in front of the car. At the same instant Mr. Broadbent caught a glimpse of Mr. Marvel and saw that the car was missing him. He did not, however, see Mrs. Marvel until the fender of the car was upon her. This would have made no difference, however, because in the short space intervening and the few seconds of time in which it all happened, nothing could have prevented the accident. The car was stopped in a distance of seven or eight feet, the body of Mrs. Marvel being under the front half of the car, her head toward the east. Lou Enderle had been sitting in his car, watching the crowds leaving the church before backing out to go home. He had heard the old folks chatting as they came up about their garden and how the light rain that was falling would benefit it. He was them pass to the rear of his machine - then heard the noise, as the Broadbent car came to a sudden stop. Not until he got out of his car and stepped around to the other did Mr. Enderle realize what had happened. In the Broadbent car were J.C. Roby and a produce commission man who visits Aurora. Mr. Broadbent and Lou spoke to Mrs. Marvel and asked her if she thought she could stand on her feet and she replied that she feared she could not. She talked calmly to them as they assisted her out and placed her in the Broadbent car to take her and her husband home. It was not believed then that she was fatally hurt. Arriving at the Marvel home, the injured woman was made as comfortable as possible until Dr. Hustead arrived. Later Dr. Steenburg was sent for. It was found that Mrs. Marvel had sustained a bad fracture of the skull at the rear, a broken and shattered leg, severe bodily bruises and internal injuries. Despite surgical aid, she died at one o'clock, shortly after the son, John Marvel, of Hastings, arrived after having made almost a record auto drive from that city. She remained conscious until very near the time of her death and talked to those about her in a perfectly rational manner. At first she directed those attending her as to where certain bedding and other needed articles could be found. She asked them to call Mrs. T.J. Garrett, the daughter, and cautioned not to unduly alarm the daughter. Mr. Broadbent remained and rendered every service possible until the end came. The other children are V.E. Marvel, on the Cavett farm; E.M. Marvel of Loup City, and A.D. Marvel, of San Diego, California. The latter could not get started to Aurora until Thursday afternoon and will arrive Saturday afternoon. Funeral arrangements will be made for Sunday. The tragedy cast a gloom over the city - greater, perhaps, than if the cause had been one of recklessness. As it is, sympathy is divided between members of the bereaved family and Mr. Broadbent, who is also crushed by the weight of it. Mr. Broadbent has driven cars longer and more than any man in the city and bears the reputation of being one of the most careful drivers anywhere. He has never before had a serious accident, although he has driven every foot of the country and towns numberless times and under kind of condition. The woman whose life was taken in the accident did not blame Mr. Broadbent, members of her family do not blame him, and the public does not. It was one of those terribly unfortunate occurrences that offered no means of prevention under the circumstances. Mrs. Marvel was 72 years of age, and the couple had planned a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary for next November. The obituary will appear next week, following the funeral service Sunday. ========================== Aurora News-Register (Aurora, NE), Thursday, April 19, 1923; pg. 1 FUNERAL SERVICE LAST SUNDAY Great Congregation of Relatives and Friends Attend Last Rites For Mrs. W.P. Marvel. No larger attendance has ever marked a funeral service at the Methodist church than that which gathered last Sunday afternoon when the final services were held for Mrs. W.P. Marvel, victim of an auto accident on Tuesday night of last week. The church was packed to its utmost capacity and scores of people who arrived after the beginning of the service were unable to get in at all. The last of the children to reach Aurora was Alonzo D. Marvel, who made the trip from San Drego (sic), California, arriving at Aurora Saturday, and completing the circle of the surviving family at the service. A wealth of floral offerings evidenced the loving esteem in which the departed had been held and the sorrow her departure has occasioned. The funeral was held from the residence and the Methodist Episcopal church (sic) Sunday afternoon, April 15, at 2:30, Rev. Chas. G. Gomon, the pastor, assisted by Rev. H.H. Heberly of the United Brethren church (sic), officiating. A mixed quartet, composed of Mrs. R.H. Cline, Miss Edyth Ogle, Mr. B.W. Woodford and the Rev. H.H. Heberly sang "Abide With Me" and "Asleep In Jesus." Mr. Boyd Bohlke, secretary of the Young Men's Sunday school class at Hastings, of which Mr. J.W. Marvel is teacher, sang a solo, "In the Garden." Sarah Catherine Darnell was born on November 9, 1851, in Boone county (sic), Indiana, and died at Aurora, Nebraska, April 11, 1923, at the age of 71 years, 5 months and 2 days. She moved to Macon county (sic), Ill., with her parents when she was fifteen years of age, and was married to William P. Marvel in Moroa, Ill., on Nov. 6, 1873. Her death occurred in the fiftieth year of her wedded life. After their marriage they moved to Vermillion county (sic), Ill., in which vicinity they resided until 1878 when they moved to southern Kansas, where they lived for twelve years, coming to Hamilton county, Nebr., in 1890. Eight years ago they moved to Aurora and located on Fourteenth street (sic), where they have since resided. Then children were born to this union, five of whom, beside the husband, survive her. The living children are Mrs. J.T. Garrett of Aurora, John W., of Hastings, Edward M., of Sherman county (sic), Alonzo D., of San Diego, Cal., and Vermil E., of near Phillips, all of whom were present at the funeral. There are eleven grandchildren and one great grand child. There were also present four brothers of the deceased - T.A. Darnell of Hominy, Okla., E.E. Darnell of Lake City, Kansas, J.M. Darnell of Pauls Valley, Okla., and A.T. Darnell of Cleburne, Texas. Another brother, R.M. Darnell of Barstow, Cal., being unable to come but visited the family here about a year and a half ago. The deceased united with the Baptist church, together with her husband, at Penfield, Ill., soon after their marriage. When they moved to the county they transferred their membership to the Methodist Episcopal church (sic) of which they have since been members.
