Bishop Mrs. L.K. Bishop Pioneer of County Sarah Catherine Mountain, oldest daughter of James and Esther Leeper Mountain, was born March 26, 1849, in Shelby county, Tenn. When she was nine years of age the family came by covered wagon to the North River community in Warren county, Iowa, where they settled. Shortly afterward her only sister, Martha, died and this made a sad impression on the surviving sister, which followed her through life. Her schooling in books was limited but her education was broad. She was always in the church services, which were held in the home of the pioneers before a church was erected, and she had always been interested in the life and needs of the church. Three brothers left her home to serve in the Civil war. One brother, William died in the Andersonville prison, and another, Wesley, was held in the same place until his health was gone. On Nov. 16, 1865, Sarah Mountain and L.K. Bishop, who had recently returned from serving in the 48th Iowa Infantry during the war, were united in marriage. Fifty years of happy married life were completed before the husband’s death, Feb. 15, 1916. Twelve children came into the home, three of them dying at a tender age. Two daughters, Bertha Brandon and Jessie Sherriff, passed on after establishing homes of their own. Children surviving are Addie Foust, Frank and Charles Bishop of Indianola, Alex of Salem, Ore., May Dey of St Charles, Lulu Vance of Des Moines, and Claude Bishop of Norwalk. There are 29 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. A half brother, James Mountain, of Joplin, Mo., also survives. Her death occurred at her home on Sunday, Sept. 19, 1937 at the age of 88 years, five months and 23 days, following an illness of one week. Funeral services were held at the North River church, with burial at the same place. Rev. Dean Chapman of Ogden officiated. Mrs. John Woodring and Mrs. Courtney sang three beautiful hymns. Pall bearers were six of her grandsons. For oh! Beyond the shadow land Where all is bright and fair, I know full well her dear old hands Will palms of victory bear. Where crystal streams through endless years Flow over golden sands, And where the old grow young again, I’ll clasp my mother’s hands.
