D. S. Guinter was born in New Columbia, Penn., December 26, 1848. Later his family took up their residence in Shannon, IL, where he was married to Miss Sarah Herman. Born in Franklin County, Penn., in 1849, Mrs. Sarah E. Guinter moved with her parents to Illinois in 1866 where she later married. In 1876 she came with her husband to Dakota Territory and they settled at Canton making the trip from LeMars, IA, to the county seat town by stage coach. In 1881, after their home had been washed away by the "flood" following the severe winter of 1880-81, the family moved to Lennox. They erected a building where the Exchange bank now stands, and there they made their residence in conjunction with Mr. Guinter's operating a hardware store. Mr. Guinter continued his hardware enterprise only a few years and then traveled as a representative for a stove company. In 1890 they moved to Sioux Falls. Mrs. Guinter, preceded in death by her husband and two sons, passed away October 21, 1935 at the home of her daughter in Sioux Falls. Mr. Guinter passed away February 21, 1920, at the home of his daughter.
