Description	:	Sarah Edith Archer Houghtelin Sarah Edith Archer, daughter of Cornelius T. Archer and Eliza A. Parks Archer, was born in Leland, Ill., on December 20, 1895. Her childhood was spent with her parents and sister on a farm in Clay county, Iowa. She was a member of one of the first classes to be graduated from the rural schools of the county. They continued making their home there for a few years following... Read More	Sarah Edith Archer Houghtelin Sarah Edith Archer, daughter of Cornelius T. Archer and Eliza A. Parks Archer, was born in Leland, Ill., on December 20, 1895. Her childhood was spent with her parents and sister on a farm in Clay county, Iowa. She was a member of one of the first classes to be graduated from the rural schools of the county. In the fall of 1892 the family moved to Spencer where she completed high school. After her first year in Cornell college, Iowa, her parents moved to Mount Vernon. They continued making their home there for a few years following her graduation during which time she taught school. Then the family returned to Spencer to reside. On December 14, 1911, she and Rev. David M. Houghtelin were united in marriage in the family home. They established their home in Des Moines, Iowa, as he was a financial secretary for the Methodist hospital. Later after his death in 1913 she returned to Spencer to live with her mother and sister where she has since resided. She died at the Spencer Municipal hospital May 6, 1955 after a short illness. Her father and mother preceded her in death. Her sister, Miss Olive Archer, survives her. Mrs. Houghtelin united with the Methodist church soon after the family moved from the farm in to Spencer. The church and its activities have held first place in her life’s interest. She belonged to the Spencer Woman’s club and worked in its various departments. Her interest included many civic affairs. Funeral services for Mrs. Houghtelin were held Monday, May 9, 1955 at 3:30 p.m. in the Grace Methodist church with Rev. L. H. Preul officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery with Cobb-Warner Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Merrill Solomon sang “Crossing the Bar,” and “Still, Still With Thee,” accompanied by Mrs. L. H. Preul. Pallbearers were: George Ditzel, Bud Carver, Carl Chalstrom, Ben Abben, E. E. Davis and John Chenhall.
