Canfield 92 one of the oldest residents of Marshallown, passed away at 3;35 O'clock Sunday afternoon at the Deaconess Hospital, death being due to shock following an emergency operation for obstruction of the bowels. Mrs Canfield had been in failing health since last November but her conditon was not critical until Sunday when she was taken to the hospitsl. Miss Sarah Elizabeth Haas was born near Union City, Ohio, Jan 12, 1840. Her mother died when she was a girl, and with her father and brothers and sisters she came to Iowa when she was 18 years of age. The family settled in the Hardin County, just south of Liscomb. After coming to Iowa Miss Haas taught school for a short time and was one of the students in the first class in the old Albion Seminary. After completing her work in the seminary she retruned to teaching being engaged in this work for several years in Marshall and Hardin counties. At one time, for several years, she was a teacher in the old Stewart school just north of Marshalltown, on third ave. road. Soon after the civil war on April 30, 1866 she married to A. N. Canfield, who had served in the northern army from 1861 to 1869, her husband served as lieutenant in the regular army, being stationed in Montana. In 1869 they returned to Iowa, making thier home at Liscomb, where mr Canfield conducted a store , and Union, where he taught in the Hartwell school west of of the city, untill 1881. He was also engaged in farming for a short time. Mr Canfield entered the civil service and was sent to washington, D.C. where he was emplyed in the pension office. Mr Canfield died in Washington in 1906. Mrs Canfield returned to Marshalltown and had since made her home here, living with her sister at 404 West nevada street. Mr and mrs. canfield had no children. Mrs cafield is survived by three sisters, Mrs. M.D. Houghton and Mrs. Olive Brown, city and mrs. Laura Gulkey of Union City Ind. Mrs canfield was the oldest member of the Congregational Church of this city. Burial in Riverside cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa
