Engle, 87, of Hicksville, stepmother of Perry L. Engle of Coshocton and sister of G.P. Nowels of Warsaw, who died Friday at her home. Florence Nowels was born Oct. 2, 1861, near Killbuck, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Purdy Nowels. On Sept. 10, 1900, she was married to William E. Engle, who preceded her in death on May 16, 1948. Mr. and Mrs. Engle moved from this county in 1904 and had resided in Hicksville for the past 44 years. Also surviving are a stepdaughter, Mrs. Floyd W. Dick of Defiance, and three other brothers. Two sisters preceded her in death. Biography from family history of George Washington Nowels as written by Howard W. Nowels about 1983: Sarah Florence Nowels Sarah Florence Nowels was born October 2, 1861 in Holmes County, Ohio. She grew to womanhood on the family farm in Holmes County. She married William E. Engle on September 19, 1900. Mr. Engle was a widower with two children, Myrtle (later Mrs. Floyd Dick) and Perry. Sarah Florence had no children of her own but was known as a loving, sweet mother to her stepchildren. William and Florence Engle farmed on the Engle home farm near Clark (Holmes County) Ohio, then moved to Mark Center, Ohio, living there while a house on their farm near Defiance, Ohio was being built. This was in 1904. They farmed in Defiance County and later Mr. Engle sold farm insurance and lightning rods for farm buildings. Sarah Florence was known to her friends as "Florence", the name she preferred. She was known as a good student, a good reader, a Bible student and was a Sunday School Teacher. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She was somewhat stoop-shouldered, brought on, she explained, because she was the oldest of the children and helped care for her younger brothers and sisters. She also sewed for neighboring families. Florence and her sisters Ida and Cora cared for their mother, Elizabeth Nowels until Eizabeth died May 11, 1928. Florence was not well for the last 12 to 15 yeas of her life, being almost blind for the last four years. She died in October, 1948, at approximately 87 years of age.
