Obit from scrapbook at Cedar County Historical Museum McCROSKEY.-In Center township, this county, at two o'clock Monday morning, May 14th, Mrs. Sarah, wife of D. W. McCroskey, aged fifty-two years. Deceased, who was an old and well known resident in this part if the county, died very suddenly. On Sabbath she took dinner with a sister, Mrs. McClung, who lives at her own former home, and not far from her present one on the John McCroskey place. At about two o'clock she started on horseback to go and see Mrs. Lucy Wright, a daughter who lives only a mile or so distant. Not long afterward Mrs. McCroskey was found lying beside the road in an insensible condition, while the horse was standing quietly near by. Help was procured and the body taken back to Mrs. McClung's, where she continued in a comatose unconscious state until death occurred at two o'clock next morning. There was no contusion on her person and there had evidently been no accident, the sad result being occasioned by a stroke of apoplexy, upon premonition of which she had either dismounted or slipped from her horse. Sarah Gay was born in Virginia and came to Cedar County in 1853, where, on Nov. 1st, 1859, she was married to David W. McCroskey. Here her home and work has since been. Five children have been born to her, of whom three, two boys and a girl, are still living. She was a kind- hearted, generous woman, a good friend and neighbor and a loyal and affectionate wife and mother. Her loss is rendered especially sad to the husband and children by its terrible suddenness, and they have the warm sympathies of a large circle of friends. The funeral was held at the place of her death on Tuesday afternoon and was very largely attended. Touching and appropriate remarks were made by Rev. N. A. McAulay, who conducted the services, after which interment was had at the Hanna Cemetery. Obit from scrapbook at Cedar County Historical Museum (From the Wilton Review.) Mrs. Sarah J. McCroskey (whose maiden name was Gay) was born in Pochahontas County, West Virginia, Dec. 23d, 1836, and died in Cedar County, Iowa, May 13th, 1888, aged 52 years, 6 months and eight days. The family left Virginia in 1854 and came to Iowa, locating in Cedar County, where they have lived ever since. On Nov. 1st, 1859, she was married to Mr. David W. McCroskey, by whom she had five children, three of which, two sons and a daughter, still survive. She made a public profession of her faith in the Christian religion. Sixteen years ago she united with the Presbyterian Church, Jan. 1872. Mrs. McCroskey was a woman of noble qualities, and though modest and retiring at times, she was the very soul of hospitality. Her house was ever open and her hands were ever ready to supply the wants of all who needed her kind ministrations. In religious matters her influence was always for the right; she was positive in her love for the house and service of God. She made no compromise with evil, enjoyed the communion of saints and found it a delight to serve the Lord. She was a faithful and sympathetic wife, a loving and tender mother, a cheerful and respected neighbor-held in the highest esteem by all who knew her. The funeral occurred on Tuesday, May 15th, at 2 p.m. The sermon was preached by Rev. N. A. McAulay, of Wilton, from the text "Ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of Man cometh." The attendance was unusually large-over one hundred vehicles making up the procession. After the service at the home the remains were borne to Hanna Cemetery and there interred in the family lot.
