Headstone probably placed about 1959. Her obituary: A FULL SHEAF OF YEARS Mrs. Sarah J. Zink, mother of Mayor John H. Zink of Animas City, passed away peacefully yesterday morning, at the home of her son, after a long illness. Mrs. Zink was 73 years of age, death being the result of a general breaking up of the system caused by her advanced years. Since Dec. 20 she had been confined to her bed. Mrs. Zink was a native of Iowa, being born near Des Moines, living in that vicinity until 1879, when she came to Nebraska. She made her home there until two years ago when she accompanied her son, J. J. Zink, to Durango, and has since made her home with him in Animas City. Her husband, now in California, two sons, J. J. Zink of this city, and C. M. Zink of Sugar City, Ida., and two daughters, Mrs. W. A. Hayes of Swan, Neb., and Mrs. C. W. Ballard of Seattle, survive her. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock form the Zink residence in Animas City, Rev. W. S. Crozier, pastor of the Presbyterian church being in charge. Interment will be in the Greenmount Cemetery. Excerpts from grandchildren Howard Zink and Ruth Zink, with some additions: Sarah Jane was born 7 Sep 1839. The Silas Jerry Grant family lived in Washington County, Iowa Territory. This was between the Ida and Skunk Rivers and not far from the Mississippi. Steam boats could haul the farm produce to market at S. Louis. Travelers on the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails needed provisions and animals. She married Joseph E Britton in Madison County, Iowa on Jan. 1, 1862. Three babies - Nannie, Inez, and Sarah Ann, were born. Joe joined the Union Army. The war was expected to be brief, so soldiers enlisted for 6 months or a year. At the end of their enlistments, they wanted to go home, the generals wanted them to stay. Those who left were called deserters. I don't know the details, but Joe was shot for being a deserter. My grandmother was a young widow with three baby girls. During the civil war, they had nothing to eat, but a neighbor told Grandmother to go into his corn field and help herself. She shelled the corn and pounded it, and with water, made a gruel. When Inez was 5, she fell from a chair, broke her back, and soon died. Grandma survived. She managed for several years. The post-war years were difficult economic times. She married James Wilson Zink on Oct. 29, 1871. Grandma was 32, Grandpa was 24. They settled on a farm at Spencer, in northwest Iowa. At Spencer, Sarah Ann died at age 15 of "green sickness", but Sarah Jane presented Jim with 4 babies - Martha, Marion, John, and Clarence. In late 1879, James moved his family to his father's home of Hymera, Indiana. My great grandfather, Michael Zink, was born in 1816. Having raised a family of 10, he had earned a spot in the rocking chair. However, his sons were looking for opportunity. In 1880, Michael, with sons James and Alonso, and 4 or 5 grandchildren set out for opportunity at Loup City, Nebraska. There, they met Dr. Robert Taylor, who was also a town merchant. Further, Dr. Taylor had a section of land southeast of town. Alonzo filed on 160 acres on one side of the Dr.'s section, and Jim and Sarah on 160 just south. Alonzo also had the excellent judgement to marry Dr. Taylor's daughter Alpha. When great grandfather Michael saw that his sons were well established, he went back home to Indiana. During the 1890's, the country experienced a severe depression. Prices sank very low, many farms were lost, and people gave up. But Jim and Sarah made it. At some time, Jim and Sarah separated. Sarah lived with her children's families at different times - Nannie, Martha in Idaho, and son John, and his wife Ida, with whom she had a close relationship. Martha's husband, Allie Hayes told Ruth Zink that Grandma Sarah Zink was an Angel on this earth. In spring of 1911, Ida and Sarah travel to Litchfield, Nebraska according to the Durango Democrat, Sarah has been with Ida and John for several months. Ruth tells stories of how Grandma spoiled her. Once, Ruth bit a neighbor boy, the boy gave her a swat on the bottom, and Grandma had to be restrained by mother from going to the boy's mother with a complaint. Grandma would get up from her sick bed to try to help in the household, she had a stroke and broke her back Dr. Davis took care of her. Ruth related that as Grandma was lying on her death bed, Ruth was stroking her hair and talking to her. If ever I am tempted to feel discouraged or discontent with anything, I hope I will remember Grandma, what a beautiful person she was! Her courage and faithfulness to her family should be an inspiration to all of us. What greater legacy could she have given?
