Lay & Nancy Freeman There is a discrepancy when Sarah died as her tombstone is dated 1848 but Nathaniel is seen on the 1850 & 1860 census with a (supposed) wife name "Jane" b. ca 1794. Was this Sarah Jane and the death date on the tombstone is in error or did Nathaniel remarry after Sarah died to a woman named Jane? If anyone can shed some light on this please feel free to contact me with your source. //KJMOH// 1850 Census: SC / Pickens Co / Regiment 5 Linch, Nathaniel - age 59 Jane - age 56 Nathaniel - age 19 Banister - age 17 Henry - age 14 Gideon - age 12 Rebecca - age 11 __________________ 1860 Census: SC / Pickens Co Lynch, Nathaniel N - age 69 Jane - age 66 Henry - 23 Gideon - age 22 _____________________________________ At one point in time, I was also unsure about the headstone for Sarah Lynch versus the 1850 and 1860 census records for Jane Lynch. However, I had two concerns: 1) The headstone not only has her death year, but her age. It's highly unlikely that both are wrong. 2) It's also unlikely that she was named Sarah on her headstone, but Jane on two census records. The children are not an issue, since all were born long before her death. Then I found a researcher on ancestry, who had solved the mystery. Jane Sutherland (unmarried) was named a s a daughter on the 1843 will of James Sutherland in Pickens District SC. Nathaniel and Jane Lynch were named as heirs in the 1860 estate settlement of Nancy Sutherland, her sister. Also, I think Sarah Lay was likely born in SC, not VA. The informant on the death record of her daughter, Elizabeth, reported her birth location as Oconee District SC.
