RICHMOND "Grandma" Richmond, one of the best known of the pioneer women of Madison county, and one who has spent a lifetime in doing good, died Friday morning in Twin Bridges at the home of her grand daughter, Miss Mary Osborne, having been ill for many months, but only seriously so for a few days. The funeral was held Sunday at Twin Bridges, where services were held in the M. E. church, the Presbyterian and Methodist Episcopal minister joining. The burial was in the cemetery at Sheridan, Sunday afternoon, the body being laid to rest beside that of her husband and son, who sleep there. At the grave there was a brief service, Sam V. Stewart of this city delivering the eulogy. Friends of the family from all parts of the Ruby and Beaverhead valleys showed their appreciation of the worth of their neighbor and friend by journeying many miles to be in attendance at the funeral. Mrs. Richmond was a native of Kentucky, where she was born in Gallatin county, March 6, 1835. Her maiden name was Sarah J. Miller and she was married at the home town Nov. 27, 1851, to Reuben Richmond of Indiana. Seven years later the family moved to Missouri, where they lived for a few years. Later, as the spirit of adventure attracted Mr. Richmond ever westward, the family went to Denver in 1860. They remained until 1863, when the discoveries of gold in Montana were attracting people from all parts of the world, the family again made a move, this time to Alder gulch arriving here Nov. 12 of that year. All of the journeys of the family, from the time they first began their trip westward from the old home in Indiana were made across the prairies by mule and ox teams, for they antedated the railroad by many years. Many friends mourn the death of "Grandma" Richmond, for she was of that true type of pioneer women who worked always for the betterment of others. During all of the years she has lived in Madison county, and she has made the Twin Bridges section her home for 40 years, where she was an earnest worker in the field for good. There was never a time when she could bring cheer to a home that she did not do so, and there was never an occasion when she was not working for the good of others. Surviving her are six children. They are: Clinton M. Richmond and Joseph O. Richmond of Twin Bridges; Mrs. Sarg E. Hall of Acequa, Idaho; Mrs. Mary A. Davis of Alder, Mont.; Mrs. Lillie J. Wigmore of Redstone, Mont.; and Henry C. Richmond of this city. In addition there are 35 grand children and seven great grand children. All of the children were with her when the end came. The pall bearers were all old time friends, who had known her almost since the first day of her arrival in Montana. Mrs. Richmond has been ill since last March, when she was seized with an attack of the grip. She rallied from this, but has been in poor health all summer.
