Deceased was born in Mason County, West Virginia, January 11, 1846, and at the date of her death was aged 47 years, 7 months and 20 days. She moved with her parents Van B. and Louisa Smith, to Wayne County, Iowa in April, 1853. She was Converted and joined the Cambria Baptist Church in January, 1862. Was married to Nelson E. Slocum on Christmas, 1865 by the Rev. Mr. Bennett, then pastor of the ME Church of Corydon, Iowa. She was the mother of six children, five of whom are living, Leona M., married Mr. Darl Henderson, June 3, 1891; Della, married Mr. Reed Wilson, December 13, 1889; Lulu, married Mr. Sedwick Kirby, September 13, 1892; Maggie now 19 years old and Earl, the bright little boy now seven years old. Deceased funeral was preached from her own yard, September 1, 1893 before all her family (except the dear one that sleeps in death) and a large audience of sympathizing friends, by Rev. L.L. Greenlee, from the last half of Prov. 14:32. She was then followed to the Kirby graveyard and laid to rest till her Lord calls, when bless God, she will come forth. The writer has known her just 39 years, was at the church when she joined, saw Rev. L.L. Greenlee baptize her. She lived a quiet, lovely and christian life, and all can join the bereaved husband and children and say, "Dear one, thou wast mild and lovely, Gentle as the summer breeze, Pleasant as the air of evening, when it floats above the trees, Yet again we hope to meet thee, When the day of life is fled, Then in Heaven with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tear is shed."
