Mrs. Sarah Jane Paul, widow of the late Edward Paul, and better known to all her friends as "Aunt Sarah Jane", died Tuesday morning at her home in Jackson at 8:30 o'clock, death being due to cancer complications. Mrs. Paul was truly one of the pioneers of the county having been born in Tipton, May 4, 1846, and had never lived farther away from Tipton than Sharpsville all her life. Since 1867 she resided on the three acre tract in Jackson where her death took place. Mrs. Paul is survived by two daughters. Mrs. Emma Banta and Mrs. Ida Brown of New York City and a son William Paul of Phoenix, Arizona. She is also survived by four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Three sons are deceased, Adam, who died in infancy, Samuel who died at the age of 20 and John, who was killed while employed as a brakeman. He left a daughter, Mrs. Maude Sweetman who resides in California. Tho two daughters have been with the mother during her last illness, one all the time since May and the most of the time. Mrs. Paul was the daughter of Shilder and Lydia (Clawson) Whitesell, who were pioneers of Tipton county, the mother having been born here in 1822. The father was born in 1818 and died in Tipton in 1854, being the first victim of the cholera plague which swept Tipton. After the death of her father, Mrs. Paul, then a mere child went into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Downhour near Sharpsville, who reared her as their own child in place of their children who had died. Mrs. Paul was always especiality appreciative of this care. Her mother later married a second time and moved away and Mrs. Paul knew little if anything of the mother or two sisters and a brother. One sister, Clara married a man by the name of Turner. After being separated all the years, Mrs. Turner and two sons came to visit Mrs. Paul in 1902 and enjoyed an exceptionally fine visit. On their way home their train was wrecked and the sister and both sons were killed. Mrs. Paul married Edward Paul on October 1, 1865, the marriage taking place at the home of her foster parents. In 1867, they moved to the little tract of land Mr. Paul had bought and built a modest house of which they both were exceptionally proud. Mr. Paul was employed in the lumber business and died in August 1920 in an accident while felling timber.
