I was born in Tuckerton, N. J. daughter of Fred Zimmerman and Saran Manervia Quinn Zimmerman. I had brothers Frederick Schiley Zimmerman age 14, and Edward Allan Zimmerman, age 12. I lived in the same house for 19-1/2 years. I started school at age seven. I could count to 1000 to 10 by 2's and 5's. My father taught me to count, every night he would play marbles with me. A game called "high bush". One would pick up a number of marbles and say High bush, the other person would say cut them down. Then the first person holding the marbles would say, How many? And the other person would guess how many you were holding in your hand. If you didn't guess right, you had to guess another game etc. That's how I learned to count. This game was played long before I went to school. My brother's nick named me "Billie", I guess they wanted a brother, but no sister was ever loved as much as I was. They would do anything for me. Every day they received pay and every day they gave me money. I saved a lot of it in an iron bank. My brothers taught me to climb trees and box with boxing gloves and to swim. I could swim when I was two years old. We lived by a creek. I always waited for high tide to go swimming. Every morning, before breakfast I'd get out of bed put on my bathing suit and run down to the creek. About 200 yards away and I'd swim for at least 2 hours (this was in the summer of course). One winter when I was about 12 I put on a bathing suit and my friend Germaine took my picture. It was cold, but seemed like fun. I remember someone calling me crazy. I can't remember if it was my mother or someone else. But it was just one of the daring things I used to like to do. I wasn't any different from kids of today in some ways. My Dad and brothers worked in the bay digging clams. They worked every day it didn't rain, blow, or was cold or frozen. Don't leave much does it? They got paid every day. My Mom and Dad planted a big garden. My Mom took care of that nearly all day. Pop came home and helped too, especially on windy days when he couldn't go in the bay. My Mom would can the stuff in the garden. About 300 quarts jars of tomatoes, 300 quarts jars of peaches, pears, string beans, beets, jelly, pickles, and pepper hash in pepper shells. Stored in a bin in the cellar was lots of potatoes and turnips. Upstairs was stored pumpkins and sun flowers. In one corner of yard near our house a deep wide hole was dug, lined with news papers and hay and filled with heads of cabbages. Then covered with hay and a lid and this kept all winter and could be used whenever we wanted cabbage. Stored upstairs also was barrels of flower and sugar and big cans of lard. My Mother also raised chickens. We had plenty of eggs and a roasted chicken every Sunday. In the spring my Mom would order a couple hundred little baby chicks from Sears and Robucks. The mailman brought them. They were so cute. I wasn't allowed to play with them, just look at them. When we first got them, they grew up so fast. At one time, I remember we had two or three pigs. My Uncle Raymond came from Millville one day after the pigs got big and they heated big tubs of water and killed the pig. I ran off somewhere when this happened. They butcher them. Uncle Ray'd took some home and we had some. I probably ate some and though no more about it. Then my brother Eddie came riding home one day with a white horse he had bought. The horse's name was Dynamite, the darn horse could just about walk. They let him sleep in our shed-barn, which was used for cooking at one time. One day he got in the barrel of food and ate so much, we couldn't get the fool out of the shed door. But he was a nice horse, a very nice horse. We had a buggy. My Mom would heat bricks on the stove and wrap them in old pieces of blankets. Put them in the buggy for to put our feet on in the winter and we would take long rides thru the woods. It was a treat to me and my Mom too. She drove and we would take a lot of roads just wide enough for the wagon. We also had a sleigh, that they hitched up to Dynamite. I don't know what became of him. I think my brother sold him. But I'll always remember him and the pleasure he brought to my young life.
