She was taking treatments and friends at home hoped to hear good results but pneumonia set in. Word was sent here to Mr. Leahy and he started at once but before he arrived at her bedside she could not speak and in her weakened condition failed rapidly until the angel of death called her home. She was a devout Catholic and she lived to the teachings of the church. Although being a strict Catholic Mrs. Leahy was a friend to all and was ever ready to render her assistance where ever needed. The remains were brought here Friday and funeral services occurred at the St. Mary's church conducted by Rev. Creegan of Volga. The pall bearers were: Tim. Glinnon, Wm. Byrnes, Jas. McTaggart, John O'Brien, D. Sculley and Peter Hanson. Interment took place in the Sacred Heart cemetery. Mrs. Leahy was Sarah Maher daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Maher was born Jan. 28, 1855 at Blairsville, Penn. When two years of age moved with her parents to Dubuque where they lived a short time then going to Dyersville and moved to a farm near Volga and later coming to a farm near Strawberry Point. Her parents were among the oldest pioneers here having purchased government land and established a home. May 30, 1878 she was united in marriage to James Leahy at the Sacred Heart church by Rev. Hackett then pastor, this being his first marriage he performed. While no children were born to this union they raised and cared for a daughter now Mrs. Mae Beattie of Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. Leahy celebrated their Golden anniversary May 30, 1938 (sic/1928). They have lived in town the past fifteen years. Mrs. Leahy is survived by her heart broken husband, the daughter and two sisters, Mrs. John Barton and Mrs. Bridget Mullen, both of Chicago, besides other relatives and a large circle of friends.
