No children born of their union. ********************************************************** The people of New Hampton and vicinity were greatly saddened at the news which reached them the latter part of February that Mrs. Sarah Gordon was suffering from a paralytic stroke. Just before Christmas she had left home to visit her brother Dr. J.S. Smith of Boston and her sister, Mrs. Mrs. J.M. Haines of Everett. Her general health had improved while there, and save for a fall that she had inducing some lameness in the middle of January, she was enjoying unusual health and spirits when, the first day of February she left Everett to visit her son Frank in Springfield. On the twenty-first day of February she walked out with her son, but complaining of some weariness made the walk short, and, on returning to the house, was stricken ill with what proved to be her mortal illness. She lingered a little more than three weeks, and passed peacefully and painlessly away. During those weeks if illness in which for the most part she was able to be around the house, her greatest suffering from inability to remember the past, and to put her thoughts into speech, she endeared herself greatly in contact with her, not only those who cared for her, but the casual visitor as well. Prof. Chapman who once was a teacher here, called often though living in Wibraham, and on learning of her death telephoned words of sympathy to her friends. Prayer was offered at the house before her journey to New Hampton, and twenty young ladies representing the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Railroad Y.M.C.A. were present, having brought a beautiful wreath of flowers. Few leave behind a larger circle of real mourners than she. Her spirit was kind, gentle, genial, affectionate, always cheerful, sympathetic and thoughtful for others. She especially endeared herself to the young people who made their home with her during their connection with the school. Prof. Aurelio and Henry D, Ayers, now of the Boston University, and Prof. H.W. Brown sat with the mourners. Many others might have been appropriately seated there. Mrs. Gordon was born in this town January 20, 1834. She is the daughter of Ephraim Hackett Smith and granddaughter of Jonathan Robertson Smith. At the age of twenty-two she was baptized and joined the church of this place. She has been for many years prominent in the work of the church, and was also a Granger much beloved because of her sweet spirit and rare social qualities. When she was 34 years of age she married Lucien Gordon, with whom she lived for twenty-five years, Mrs. Gordon's death occurring in 1888. Mrs. Gordon, for the past few years, had had the care of "Uncle Jerry" who lives alone in his home at the old Institution, but during the coldest of winter weather would make his home with his niece. He is now in his 97th year and of course the infirmities of age are his. He will feel the loss of Mrs. Gordon more than any other one since he was so dependent upon her care. Mrs. Gordon's death occurred at Springfield at the home of Frank Gordon, who with his wife, ministered most tenderly to the last days of weakness and feebleness that she passed upon this earth. On Sunday morning, March 18th she passed from trial to reward. The funeral took place at the New Hampton Free Baptist Church Wednesday at two o'clock in the afternoon, the pastor Rev. R.L. White officiating. He paid a tender and loving tribute to the rare worth of her personality and character. The bearers were Charles D. Thyng, Frank P. Morrill, Frank D. Sanborn and Henry Gordon. Flowers of the most beautiful sort, gifts from many friends were in abundance. A weekday as it was, the attendance was large and indications of the deep emotion were evident. The citizens of New Hampton village have great reason to sorrow over her taking away. It is an almost irreparable loss to the community. Among the mourners present were Jedediah Smith, the oldest man in town, Dr. and Mrs. J.J. Smith of Boston, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Haines of Everett, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Smith of the same city; Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Gordon of Springfield, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Clay and family, Misses Smith and Mrs. Smith of Ashland.
