Obit from Sumner Gazette - September 14, 1911 Pages 1 and 5 Mrs. Sarah Madden Sarah Martin was born October 24, 1831, and passed out of this life into the life beyond Sept. 8th at 9 p.m. at her home in Sumner. Had she lived till the 24th of Oct. 1911 she would have been 80 years old. She was born in Hampshire Co., W. Virginia, moving from there with her parents to Washington, Iowa, in 1853, where she lived till 1860, when she and husband moved to the Pinhook neighborhood in Bremer county. In 1863 they moved onto their old homestead six miles southwest of Sumner, living there continuously 42 years. October 5th, 1905 the children held a reunion at the old homestead at which all of the children were present. Feb. 21, 1906, she moved to Sumner. She was united in marriage to George W. Madden July 27, 1856 and to this union was born seven sons and four daughters. She leaves to mourn her loss eleven children, three stepchildren, one brother, 53 grand children, 15 great grand children and numerous other relatives and friends. Her husband died June 5th, 1889. Mrs. Madden was converted under the labors of Rev. Wagner and joined the U.B. church Nov. 31, 1880, of which she has since been a faithful member, always ready to do her part cheerfully. Hers was a quiet home life, and it might be said of her, "She hath done what she could". The funeral service was held at the United Brethren church in Sumner, beginning at 1:00 o'clock Monday afternoon. Rev. Jamieson officiating. The service was largely attended, the deceased having been of wide acquaintance and greatly esteemed. Burial was made in the Fay cemetery, nine miles northwest of town. Nearly all of the children were home for the funeral, being called from their widely scattered places of residence. Mention of all is made in a news item on the first page of this issue. News Item Page 1 Relatives attending the funeral of Mrs. G. W. Madden, which took place Tuesday, were Joseph Madden, wife and two children, from Halfa, Iowa; Will Treptow and wife from Burt, Iowa; Geo. W. Madden, wife and baby from Lynd, Minn.; Chas. and Marcellus Madden, Marshall, Minn.; Ed. Madden and daughter, Amiret, Minn.; Rebecca Bixby, Spirit Lake, Iowa; Mrs. Julia Robinson and husband, Oelwein, Iowa; and Will Hurlbut, Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Stufflebeam of Denver, Colo., could not be present owing to having recently undergone an operation, and is still in Mercy Hospital at Waverly; John Madden of Spokane was kept at home by sickness in his family, and Samuel Madden of Anthony, Kansas, who was moving and not found by the telegraph messenger in time.
