Description	:	Sarah Painter and John Martin were married on 19 March 1826 in Franklin County, Ohio. The marriage license is the only known primary-source record of Sarah Martin (née Painter). She was born possibly about 1808; her youngest known child, Angeline, was born in 1832. She was born possibly about 1808; her youngest known child, Angeline, was born in 1832. Parents Sarah Martin (née Painter) was probably a daughter of Elizabeth (née Redd) and Isaac Painter, junior, a couple married 13 August 1799 in Frederick County, Virginia. Passing through Fairfield County, Ohio, Isaac Painter settled in Franklin County's Jefferson Township in 1814 (or soon afterwards). He was elected justice of the peace there in 1821 and 1835, and enumerated there in 1830. No known record, however, expressly links Isaac Painter, junior, with Sarah Martin. If this conjecture is correct, Isaac Branson Painter, who married Sarah's daughter Angeline, was Sarah's first cousin. Death Sarah Martin died before 1850; the date is unknown. John Martin in the 1850 census was enumerated with Elizabeth, identified as John Martin's wife in the 1860 census and in his 1862 will. (The record of John Martin's marriage to Elizabeth has not been found.) Sarah Martin is mentioned in her two sons' biographies— • "JOHN W. MARTIN was born in Franklin County, Ohio, March 12, 1828, and is one of the four children of John C. and Sarah (Painter) Martin. The father of John was born in Hardy County, W. Va., in 1797; he was a carpenter and farmer, and died in Franklin County, Ohio, in April, 1862. Except a brief residence in Union County, Ohio, John W. Martin lived in Franklin County until he came to his present location, in November, 1865. When eighteen years old, he learned stone-carving and lettering at Columbus, Ohio [...] On October 18, 1849, he was married to Samantha Niswander [...]" (Counties of White and Pulaski, Indiana (Chicago: F. A. Battey & Co., 1883), p. 414.) • "ANDREW JACKSON MARTIN, attorney at law and Mayor of Plain City, was born in Franklin County, Ohio, December 8, 1826. He is a son of John and Sally Martin, natives of Virginia, the former of English and the latter of German descent. He received his education in the common schools of his native county, and, until of age, worked with his father at farming and carpentering." (History of Madison County, Ohio (Chicago: W. H. Beers & Co., 1883), p. 974.) Both biographies identify the father, John Martin, as a farmer and carpenter. Sarah or Sally—if identified correctly as being a daughter of Elizabeth (née Redd) and Isaac Painter, junior—was the granddaughter of German-born Andrew Redd (né Andreas Roth), but otherwise mostly English. Andrew Jackson Martin's 1880 census line indicated that his mother was born in Ohio. (Many of Isaac Painter's descendants were named Andrew Jackson.) This census page shows Sarah's husband, four children (Andrew Jackson, Margaret Elizabeth, Angeline, and John Wesley), and probable brother John Painter. In a 28 Apr 2007 email, P. S. Chamberlain related that he had visited Methodist Hill Cemetery on 24 Sep 1996 and on 18 Oct 1998. "To the right of John Martin are several broken markers. One is assumed to be Sarah (Painter) Martin, but cannot read much of any of it. There is a four line poem on it but about the only thing we can positively make out is dearest mother. Also there are two broken pieces that seem to fit together. The top one reads - "ELIZABETH Wife of J. M " (then broken). The bottom part reads - Died Mar. 12 1871 Aged 72 yrs 6 mo 21 da". To the left of John is a marker that reads "Jane Martin Died Mar. 19, 1856 Aged 19y 11m 18d". We went back to the cemetery the second time in hopes of making out more of what we assume to be Sarah's marker. We made a video of it as well as still photos and have viewed it many times since and still cannot make it out." Reviewed 26 July 2020.
