Obit From the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka, Kansas No newspaper name or dates listed A GRAND OLD PIONEER MOTHER CALLED HOME We are called upon to choronicle the passing of another of the fine pioneer mothers of the Solomon Valley in the passing of Mrs. John Vernon, who for almost sixty years has lived here, coming to the Asherville community with her parents in 1870 and four years later becoming the bride of John M. Vermon. They have made the name Vernon stand out in Solomon Valley history as it has always been associated with any movement that was for the advancement of the community. Sarah Rosana Darrow was born near Sinclairville, New York, Oct., 16th, 1847, and died at her home near Simpson, August 6, 1927, aged 79 years, 9 months and 20 days. She was married to J. M. Vernon March 19, 1874. To this union nine children were born, seven of whom are living, who cared for her during her illness and were at her bedside when she passed away. Mrs. Vernon was from a family of ten children, all of whom have preceded her but one sister, Mrs. Esther Chapel of Woodston, Ks., who has been with her during her last illness. Mrs. Vernon was one of the pioneers of this community and together with her husband endured the hardships and privations of a new country. Her husband passed away August 5th 1922, just 5 years ago. Mrs. Vernon was a kind neighbor and a loving mother and will be sadly missed in the community that has known and loved her for over half a century. She leaves to mourn her death, four sons and three duaghters, twelve grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, one sister, besides other relatives and a host of friends. The funeral services were held at the family hom north of town by the Rev. R. R. Kaiser, pastor of the Christian Church at Beloit, Sunday afternoon, August 7, and the remains of this find old lady were laid to rest in the Glasco cemetery. A choir composed of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Deschner, Mrs. Chas. Pearson, Miss Neva Sellect and Mr. Phillip Louthan sang the beautiful hymns, Beautiful Isle, The Old Rugged Cross and Abide With Me. The pallbearers were Mr. Will Loop, Mr. Joy Darrow, Mr. Will Richards, Mr. Chris Weaver, Mr. Chas. Carter and Mr. Arthur Chapel.
