SALLIE PENNINGTON, AGED 88, DIED AT HER HOME IN HANFORD SUNDAY - HELD OBSEQUIES THIS AFTERNOON Mrs. Sallie Pennington, aged 88, died at her home here Sunday, Oct. 12, after a brief illness. Mrs. Pennington was born in Muncie, Ind., Jan. 31, 1831, where she spent her girlhood days. At an early age she married Harless Ashley of Kokomo, Ind., to which union was born one daughter, Mrs. Mattie A. Kearns, a resident of Fresno, and a son, Arthur Ashley, now deceased, who resided long in Hanford where he was widely known for his building activity. The husband and father, who was county treasurer at Kokomo, Ind., volunteered as a quartermaster in the Civil War and was murdered by bushwhackers while serving with the 89th Indianans. Later Mrs. Ashley married Levi Pennington of North Salem, Ind., and the couple moved to Montana, where the latter was engaged in the cattle ranching business with the late President Benjamin F. Harrison. After five years of residence there, Mrs. Pennington's health required them to move to a California desert climate and they located at Calexico, San Bernardino county, and later to this vicinity. The death of Mr. Pennington followed shortly and for the last score of years, the widow has been residing at here home here with her brother, James Garner, and lovingly cared for by a niece, Mrs. Susan Hale. While she bad suffered severe injuries from a fall three years ago, Mrs. Pennington only began to show failing health in the last month. Her death is mourned by the following immediate relatives: Mrs. Mattie A. Kearns of Fresno, a daughter, and her two children, Harless A. Kearns of Fresno and Mrs. Julia K. James of Los Angeles; the widow of her son Arthur M. Ashley, of this city, and two children, Harless Ashley and Ada Ashley; James Garner of Hanford, a brother; Mrs. Margaret Freed of Stella, Neb., a sister, and Mrs. Hale, the niece. The Rev. C. P. Crisp officiated at the funeral services at the Peoples' Undertaking association chapel this afternoon which were largely attended. The Baptist choir furnished several beautiful selections.
