Read More	OLD PIONEER DIES SPRINGVILLE, JULY 15: SPECIAL: Mrs, Sally Corby, one of the oldest settlers of Linn county, died at her home near Paralta. Saturday forenoon. Mrs. Corby was 93 years of age and had lived in Linn county nearly 73 years. She was active in mind and body up to the last, having good eyesight and hearing. In a conversation with her not long ago she told of many incidents in the early history of Linn county pertaining to the eastern part of it. The first wedding was that of Ed Crow and Eliza Bennett in 1839 on the Buffalo Creek northeast of Springville. Eliza Bennett was also the first school teacher and was related to Mrs. Corby, who insisted that this was the first wedding in the county. In the early days flour mills had no bolters and Mrs. Corby tells of having bolted or sifted her flour through her veil and in times of stress of flood she had to often bray her flour and meal as in a mortar. Mail was had once in three weeks from Dubuque on horseback. The first death Mrs. Corby told about was in 1839 and to get a coffin a cherry tree was felled and split into puncheons and smoothed down with axes and stained with grape juice. Mrs. Corby claimed relationship with Ethan Allen of Revolutionary fame and her grandfather was a soldier in that war and she had several relics of the were made by her grandfather and showed them to callers. Cabins were all built of logs and some had to cover them with basswood bark with would dry and roll and when the rain came it was not a dry time in that cabin. Carting dressed hogs to Muscatine, Iowa, and selling them for one fifty per hundred was another of Mrs. Corby recollections, which would drive a bad feeling to farmers these....... I do not have a copy of the full obituary. The above is all I have.
