Mrs. John Luther, another of the pioneer settlers and most highly esteemed residents of the county, passed to the great beyond at her home in Madrid, Friday, February 23, after a lingering illness of several years duration, during which she was a most patient sufferer. Her maiden name was Sally Reed and she was born in Lawrence County, Ind., March 8, 1830, being almost 76 years of age at the time of her death. Here on July 4, 1848, she was united in marriage to John Luther. In 1854 she came with her husband to Boone County and settled near Madrid. They did not like the country, however, and in 1856 returned to their native state, where they remained until 1866, when they again came to Iowa and settled on the farm two miles north of Madrid where they resided until 1904, when they removed to Madrid to spend their declining years in peace. To them were born seven children, three of whom died in infancy. The aged husband, two sons, N.A. and B.K. Luther of Madrid and two daughters, Mrs. Antoinette Rednour of Jefferson and Mrs. Jane Hitchcock of North Dakota, are left to mourn her death, all of whom except Mrs. Hitchcock were present at her death bed. She was a devoted member of the Free Will Baptist Church in Madrid and lived an earnest Christian life, admired and beloved by all who knew her. The funeral services were held from the Methodist church, Monday afternoon, Feb. 26, at 1:00 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Umpleby, and the remains followed by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors to their last resting place in Fairview Cemetery north of Madrid. Boone County Democrat, March 9, 1906
