On 2 May 1790, Sarah Scofield married Samuel Mather by his father, Rev. Moses Mather in his church in Darien [Early Connecticut Marriages, 62; Barbour Collection, Stamford Town Marriage Records, 2:59]. This is the same Rev. Mather who married Sarah’s parents in 1755 and knew Sarah from birth. Rev. Mather, a famous Revolutionary War patriot, even has a Wikipedia biography describing some of his exploits and the death of a son in a British prison in New York City. In spite of Sarah being nine years older than Samuel, the 24-year old bachelor took on being a husband to 33-year old Sarah and step-father to her pre-teenage son. The August 1790 census of Samuel Mather’s household included a female (Sarah) and a male under 16 (Sarah’s son, Jonathan) [1790 Norwalk and Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut; Series: M637; Roll: 1; Page: 323; Image: 316; Family History Library Film: 0568141]. On 10 January 1791 twin sons, Isaac and Raymond Mather are born [Barbour Collection, Stamford Town Birth Records, 2:59]. Three more sons followed. The following is from Abstracts of Stamford (Connecticut) Probate Records, Book One, 23 April 1792. Jonathan Scofield, about 14 [b. 1778] years of age, of Stamford, a son of the wife of Samuel Mather, Apr. 23, 1792, bond of his guardian, Samuel Mather. Living in Mather’s household since his mother’s marriage in 1790, the minor Jonathan Scofield chooses Samuel Mather as his guardian. Before computerized materials were easily available, wild assumptions were made about Sarah’s birth year, 1751 to 1769, which have been erroneously copied as accurate. Her death notice and gravestone puts guessing to rest. Sarah Scofield was born in Darien, Fairfield County, Connecticut on 24 September 1756, eldest child of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Smith) Scofield [Barbour Collection, Stamford Town Birth Records, 1:52]. Sarah’s parents were married in the Middlesex Parish (now Darien) Congregational Church by Rev. Moses Mather on 30 October 1755 [Barbour Collection, Stamford Town Marriage Records, 1:123]. In that record, Jonathan Scofield (b. 1731 in Norwalk, son of David and Sarah (Slason) Scofield) is designated as being from Middlesex Parish (now Darien) and Elizabeth Smith is from Norwalk. Daughter Sarah’s birthdate is noted, and her younger siblings have their baptism dates recorded at the Darien church. Samuel and Sarah Mather last appear in the 1840 census of Darien, the couple living alone (1 white male 70-80; 1 white female 80-90) [Darien, Fairfield, Connecticut; Roll: 21; Page: 121; Image: 247; Family History Library Film: 0003018]. After Samuel Mather’s death in 1842, Sarah moved to her son’s home in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut. She died there on her birthday, 24 September 1844, age 88 [“Middletown Constitution" of 2 October 1844 states: “Widow Sarah Mather died September 24, 1844, age 88. Widow of Samuel Mather of Darien”]. I have done research on this line and have referred to original work by Harriet Scofield done in the 1940s and 1950s. Sarah Mather is NOT connected to Noah Scofield. While Sarah Scofield was marrying Samuel Mather in 1790 in Darien, Noah Scofield was living in Frederickstown (now Kent, Putnam County), New York with his family. I can send you detailed information on this study, but since you are now in charge of this memorial, perhaps it would be more accurate to disconnect references in Sarah's memorial to Noah and Rufus Scofield. ***** I found her in the 1790 census listed as widow Sarah Scofield with 3 of her children in Stamford, CT.
