An avid gardener and was a member of the... Read More	Sarah Stacy Butler, 94, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born in Chattanooga, TN, the daughter of Walter Clarence Stacy (1874–1933) and Mary Lou Culberson Stacy (1880-1980); wife of the late Thomas Bothwell Butler (1903–1972). Graduated from Girls Preparatory in Chattanooga and attended Sweetbriar College in Virginia. An active member of The Episcopal Church of the Advent and served on the Altar Guild for many years, was a member of The Assembly, The Piedmont Club, and The Country Club of Spartanburg. An avid gardener and was a member of the Fortnightly Flower Club and the Gardeners. In 1941 she was president of the Spartanburg Garden Club Council at which time the Council decided to expand its work to include the war effort and established the local branch of Bundles for Britain. Mrs. Butler assumed leadership of this branch and remained its leader until the end of World War II. Soon thereafter she attended the National Council of State Garden Clubs school for flower show judges and became a qualified judge in both horticulture and arrangement classes. She judged in flower shows in NC, SC, and GA. Served two terms as a member of the Board of National Council of State Garden Clubs. About this time Mr. Butler became interested in camellias, and they both became experts at growing and exhibiting their blooms at camellia shows all over the South. On April 24, 1987, she dedicated at Wofford College, in Mr. Butlers memory, a fountain surrounded by his beloved camellias and shaded from the hot summer sun by crepe myrtles. This became known as Butler Circle and is now a showpiece. She was extremely interested in the School of Music at Converse College. In April 1983, she helped to establish Friends of the School of Music at Converse College. At Converse, she later donated funds to build a rose garden to be seen from the college dining hall. Later she established an endowment for the maintenance and upkeep of the college campus. When this was found to be inadequate, she donated further funds. Converse College established a garden in her honor between the Milliken Art Center and Daniel Music Hall, and on September 16, 2002, this garden was dedicated to her and named the Sarah Stacy Butler Garden. Survived by one grandson, Matthew Calbraith Butler. Also predeceased by her son, Thomas Bothwell Butler, Jr. (1939-1985) Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 20, 2003, at The Church of the Advent by Rev. Dr. Clay H.
