By the recent sorrowful death of Thomson Arnold, at North Manchester, one of the most prominent families of Wabash county has been totally blotted out within the comparatively brief period of nine years. For a generation prior to 1892 no family in Wabash county occupied a more conspicuous place in the social and financial life of the county. In 1893 the First National bank of North Manchester, of which Mr. Arnold was the president and principal owner, collapsed, during the bank panic which spread disaster throughout the country, and a little later Mrs. Arnold died of consumption; following her the eldest daughter, Mrs. Charles Baker, of Columbus, Ind., died of the same disease, and a short time afterward Mrs. Baker's two children were taken away by tubercular trouble. Two years ago Mrs. Schuyler Haas, of Indianapolis, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold, expired of consumption, and soon was followed by her father, Jesse Arnold. Now the last chapter is written in the extinction of the family by the demise of Thomson Arnold, the only survivor, making seven persons who have passed away in less than a decade.
