Description	:	Sarrah (Sadie) is the daughter of William D Smith (1804-1853) of Maryland and Christena (Christianna) Jay (1809-1852) of Bedford County Pennsylvania. Sarrah was born on May 10, 1846. Sarrah's mother Christena died in 1852 in Putnam County, Ohio as the family traveled west out of Bedford County, Pennsylania. Her father, William died in 1853 near Granville, Licking County Ohio on the family's return trip to Pennsylvania. Sarrah's mother Christena died in 1852 in Putnam County, Ohio as the family traveled west out of Bedford County, Pennsylania. Her father, William died in 1853 near Granville, Licking County Ohio on the family's return trip to Pennsylvania. The 7 orphans (Fred age 16, Catherine age 15, Francis age 12, John age 10, Sarrah age 7, Elizabeth age 3 and William age 1) traveled alone to the home of their father's brother and sister, (Asa "Uncle Abe" and Elizabeth "Aunt Betsy" ) in Belmont County, Ohio. They formed a family and again headed west and settled in Wapello County, Iowa in the spring of 1858. Sarrah's oldest siblings Fred Smith and sister-in-law Carrie Johnson Smith, sister, Catherine and her husband, Nicholas Poling, brother, Francis Smith and his wife, Eunice Galland Smith, and brother, John T Smith and wife, Margaret Ida Hite Smith all lived and died in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. Sarrah's younger brother William Granville Smith married Sarah Hite from Wapello County and then later moved to Riggins, Idaho County, Idaho. A younger sister Elizabeth would marry Charles W Stewart from Missouri and move to Idaho County, Idaho and then later to Spokane County, Washington. Sarrah's first marriage was to a Mr. Sayler. Sarrah second marriage was to William Sawyer on Aug 18, 1887. Sarrah and William had a son in 1888 whom they named John Henry Sawyer. Her husband William died in 1895 and is buried in Zion Cemetary in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa. In a 1900 US Census, Sarrah is listed has widowed and living with her son John Henry in Green Township, Wapello, Iowa. Also living with them were her brother William G Smith and his two children Hervey Roy age 18 and Della May age 14. Sarrah died on November 15, 1914 and is buried in Zion Cemetary.
