Description	:	Sarah Pike was born on December 10, 1827 near Louisville, Kentucky, and died on July 28, 1905 at her home in Graf, Nebraska. In the spring of 1865, she with husband and family came to... Read More	Sarah Pike was born on December 10, 1827 near Louisville, Kentucky, and died on July 28, 1905 at her home in Graf, Nebraska. When she was two years old she came with her parents to Indiana and after one year moved to Illinois where she lived for several years. On July 3, 1845 she was married to James A. Van Winkle and during the following winter she was converted and joined the Methodist Evangelical Church of which she was a member ever since till her death. In the spring of 1865, she with husband and family came to Nebraska, crossing the river at Brownsville. They settled in Johnson County where they have lived since, except two years spent in Kansas. There were nine children born to this family, six boys and three girls, of whom five boys and one girl survive the mother. The living are Mrs. J. Carmen, William, George, Robert, Jack and A. P. Van Winkle. All were present at the departure of the mother but A. P. who lives in South Dakota. There are forty living grandchildren and thirty two great-grandchildren. Grandma was a great sufferer during her last few years having some very severe illness and her strong constitution would throw it off. A small blister on one of her toes soon became a sore that refused to heal and in a few days gangrene set in and its ravages were unable to be checked. The toe was amputated but the disease set in again and soon overcame her. She was very patient and her only care seemed to be for those around her and no one heard her complain of the suffering only to hear her call upon her God to take her. He had made the clothes for her burial and laid them away and gave careful instruction as to the funeral. About 11 P.M. she went out to meet her Lord. The funeral services were conducted at the Mount Hope Church and she was buried in the adjoining cemetery to await the resurrection day. E. B. Maxey, who for the past 1 year had been her pastor, conducted the services. Grandpa, whom death robbed of his companion of the past 60 years, bore his sorrow with Christina fortitude. As the cold earth was rolled in upon the remains of this companion he was able to look to the meeting as only a few days hence and while comforting the sorrowing children was shouting the praises of him who doeth all things well.
