(Star-News - Thursday, May 30, 1957) ------------------------------------ Saul Camp, Race Horse Owner Dies SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 29 - Saul Camp, 65, wealthy California rancher who became the leading money winning harness horse owner in 1956 due largely to a trotter named Scott Frost, died today. Camp died in St. John's Hospital, Santa Monica, while undergoing surgery for removal of a brain tumor. He had been ill for several months. A self-made millionaire, who came to California's San Joaquin Valley with $20 in his pocket and parlayed potatoes, cotton and cattle into a 20 million dollar agricultural empire at Shafter, Calif., Camp went into harness racing in a big way after World War II. In 1947, 1948 and 1949 he was the biggest buyer at the yearling sales at Eastern auctions, going as high as $42,000 for an unproved colt that turned out to have chronic bone trouble and was never put in training. His big outlays began paying off as he acquired such standouts as Prince Jay, Diamond Hal and Scott Frost. The latter, picked up for $8,200, was harness horse of the year in 1955 and 1956, and winner of the Hambletonian at Goshen, N.Y., as a 3-year-old. Camp is survived by his widow, Nellie; a son, James, and a daughter, Mrs. Don Hart. (The Lima (Ohio) News - Thursday, May 30, 1957) ------------------------------------
