Wabash was shocked Thursday at the sudden death of Seberry Gill, 65, oldest man in years of service of the police department. The death occurred about 9:30 o'clock in the forenoon as the patrolman was seized with an attack of heart disease while driving an Army vehicle in the city park to point out a suitable noon stopping place for a column en route through here. The Army officers had stopped at the City Hall to inquire about local accommodation for their noonday meal, and Chief Frank S. Gurtner detailed Mr. Gill to take the advance party to the park shelter house. Died in Car. Gill did the driving, and as they neared the curve in the trail leading downhill from the log cabin, he suddenly slumped over against the steering wheel. The Army men were able to immediately stop the car, and they then lifted Gill from the driver's seat and placed him on blankets on the ground. A physician and an ambulance were summoned, but Gill was dead by the time of their arrival. Mr. Gill had been in declining health for several months, in fact, the chief had sent him home on several occasions in the past few months, when he saw that the patrolman was not feeling well. However, when he left for work early Thursday forenoon, Gill told his wife that he "felt fine." The descedent was born near Roann, Jan 4, 1876, the son of Ira and Emma Gill, and had been a life resident of the county. He was thrice married, the last time to Myrtle Gidley about 25 years ago. Mr. Gill for a number of years was employed at the former Wabash Strawboard plant, and later had established a record of approximately 13 years service with the City Police department, one year during the administration of Dr. Lorin Smith, and throughout the Showalter and Smallwood terms. He was a member of the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police. Lauds His Service. His colleagues at the City Hall were sorrowed by the death and Chief Gurtner remarked, "Seberry certainly was a good fellow, and would do anything you told him, or go along on any kind of job. If you wanted him to work overtime, he'd do it, and he never complained, although there were times when I knew he wasn't feeling up to par. We'll miss his faithful service." Besides the widow, he is survived by two sons, Warner Gill, Peoria, Ill., and Ralph Gill, Hawaii; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Cattin, Wabash, and Mrs. Juanita Miller, Indianapolis; four brothers, Carl Gill, Danville, Frank Gill, Fort Wayne, and Roy and Charles Gill, North Manchester, and one sister, Mrs. Fred Frei, Wabash. The body was taken to the Jones Funeral Home for preparation for burial. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Christian church with the Rev. Fred Wolff officiating. Burial will be in Falls Cemetery. The local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, of which Mr. Gill was a charter member, will conduct graveside services. The Wabash Police Department will serve as pallbearers for their deceased colleague.
