At the age of 19, having a desire to devote his life to religion and study, he entered a Dominic monastery, but after three years of study and acquaintance with convent life and not finding there that purity and liberty that his heart and mind desired, he left it, and with the means earned by giving private lessons, continued his studies and shortly became teacher and later professor in the public schools. While in the convent and later in the public libraries from liberal professors, he made a study of the Bible and Theology, and finding that the teachings of the Catholic Church were not in full accord with the teachings contained in the Bible, he resolved to cleave only to what he considered right and in accord with the word of God. Being at all times of a free and liberal mind, he soon found that he was confronted with the alternative to either suppress his love of frankness, liberty, and the dictates of his conscience, or else have the displeasure of the church, which he well understood to mean antagonism of that great power in all and to all his life's undertakings. The choice was made in accord with his broad mind and pure conscience, but the choice was as a declaration of war and from that day (1849) till the year 1866, he was continually at battle, first in defense against false accusations as to his teachings of liberty of speech and conscience. Later, about 1855, being fully convinced that the teachings of the Protestant Church were nearer to the teachings of Christ and the Gospel, he embraced it and became a minister in said church, and from that day he took the aggressive part and preached the "Good Tidings" of Christ to the masses that were kept in ignorance of much of the love and merciful provisions that the word of God contains. His particular mission was to bring the gospel and the starting of Christian congregations in those towns and cities where there were none such, and therefore his task was always a hard one. Perhaps no one who is not acquainted with those times and in that country with the dense ignorance and superstitious feeling of its people in religious matters and the great influence and oppressive power of the Catholic Church at that time can have any clear idea of how difficult and dangerous such a task was. But being a man of broad mental power, pleasing manners, full of zeal and a fearless countenance that inspired both respect and admiration, he made great strides in his work which, of course, angered the more the opposing church. Many were the plots laid and the attempts made for the taking of his life and liberty, but either by prudence but especially by his fearlessness and the hand of protection from above, his life was always spared. In 1865 in the town of Bassignana, an attempt was made, which came very near putting an end to his eventful life. While coming from the post office and passing in front of the Catholic Church, the priest being in waiting for him, came out with the pretext that he wished to speak to him, suddenly and treacherously with one hand grabbed his long beard and with the other struck him a blow with some iron instrument, causing a fracture of his skull. He fell to the ground as dead, and then with the help of a few of his ruffians, they stamped the prostrate man with their feet all over his body. Almost miraculously some of his friends noticed the scene and came boldly to his rescue, and after a hard struggle, succeeded in carrying him to his home to be met by his wife who was in such a condition that shortly afterwards she gave birth to a child which suffered from palpitation of the heart and soon after died. Recovering from this shock and seeing his family in constant danger and almost deprived from the schools on account of the different religious belief, and knowing of the freedom to be enjoyed in the United States and wishing that his family might enjoy such privileges, he in 1866 came to this country with his oldest son. A year after, he returned to Italy but as one after the other his four sons came to this country in 1885 decided to bring the rest of the family to Kansas where his sons were then living. In 1889 he came to California where all his family except one is now residing. He contented himself to a life of mediocrity in the midst of his loved ones rather than to seek a higher position which his intellectual abilities and being well versed in Greek, Latin, French, and Italian would have made it easy for him to obtain. Shortly before his death, he had decided and commenced to write a book of his interesting and instructive life, but death came too soon and the writings are incomplete. While death has ended his useful life, his deeds remain. Having sown the good seed in his life, the harvest will be great and his crown of like proportions.
