Description	:	Selma Catherine was the oldest of three children born to Jacob and Caroline Wied. She entered this world on April 24, 1916 in Staplehurst, NE. She grew up in a rural setting where daily chores included carrying water from the well into the house,gathering eggs, and helping with the baking and cooking over a wood or corn cob fired stove. Winter nights were made more bearable against the cold by using a footwarmer filled with hot embers. her mother used inheritance money from the sale of a farm to give Selma a 2 year college education at Concordia Teachers College... Read More	Selma Catherine was the oldest of three children born to Jacob and Caroline Wied. She entered this world on April 24, 1916 in Staplehurst, NE. Selma taught 2 years in Bancroft NE before marriage to Lester Pieper on July 9, 1939. At that time a teacher could not be married, so Selma was content to stay at home and raise 2 children (Dale and Carol) that would be born to this union. Due to a teacher shortage in 1952, she was coaxed back into the classroom. The marriage rule had long been discarded. She taught for more than 25 years. Selma was an active member of the Seward Community throughout her adult life, from being a Den Leader for Boy Scouts to Seward Women's Club to Delta Kappa Gamma. She never lost her enthusiasm to learn and experience new things. She felt blessed to have lived so many changes: horse-drawn buggies to Superjets, silent movies to VHS movies in her own home, space exploration, all things electronic, etc. So very different from the world experienced by her parents as they entered New York harbor at Ellis Island. She died October 18, 1988 after suffering a second heart attack.
