Description	:	Selma Elise (Standy) Fijala was born June 19, 1914 to Mikkel and Lena (Johnson) Standy on the family farm in Charles Mix County, near Geddes, SD. She joined a growing family as the ninth child of twelve children that included six brothers and five sisters. She attended a rural school, Morningside for her elementary years. Graduating from Platte High School in 1934 she went on to attend Huron College, earning her teaching certificate. She then taught at Bovee School. Read More	Selma Elise (Standy) Fijala was born June 19, 1914 to Mikkel and Lena (Johnson) Standy on the family farm in Charles Mix County, near Geddes, SD. She joined a growing family as the ninth child of twelve children that included six brothers and five sisters. She attended a rural school, Morningside for her elementary years. Graduating from Platte High School in 1934 she went on to attend Huron College, earning her teaching certificate. She then taught at Bovee School. On May 4, 1940 she united in marriage to Frank Fijala in Butte, NE. They farmed together in Moore Township near Geddes until Frank’s death in 1957. She resided at the farm until 1962 when she became a resident of Platte, SD. Selma was a member of the Platte Olive Presbyterian Church and active in Circle #2, a 70+ year member of Acacia Chapter #63 Order of the Eastern Star in Platte, holding many offices and belonged to the Platte Women’s Club. After moving to Platte, she was employed as secretary for Friendly Gas and later, Home Implement. “Sally” was an avid card player, enjoyed growing flowers, visiting with her friends and the antics of her great grandson. Grateful for having shared in Selma’s life: her daughter, Anita Crosby and husband, Wayne of Platte, SD; two grandchildren: Jenise Pischel and husband, Chad of Mitchell, SD and Wade Crosby and wife, Tricia of Ithaca, NY; a great grandson, Hayden Pischel; a brother, Oscar Standy of Spokane, WA; a sister, Myrtle Scott of Geddes, SD; along with many special nieces and nephews. Selma was preceded in death by: her husband, Frank; her parents; five brothers: Gilbert, Martin, Ed, Elmer and Joe; four sisters: Inga, Ida, Polly and Gena; along with several brothers and sisters-in-law.
