She died Nov. 2, 2006, at Avera Eureka Health Care Center. Selma H. Hagel, daughter of Christian and Ruth (Bertsch) Hagel, was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Eureka, S.D. She attended Eureka Public School and graduated with the Class of 1947. She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as Eureka's first head operator. She was united in marriage to Alton Kary on May 27, 1951, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ at Eureka. They made their home in Eureka. In the mid-1960s, Northwestern Bell Telephone Company moved their operators to Aberdeen. Selma then went to work for Dr. Otto Kramlich, DDS, as his receptionist. She retired from full-time work in the late 1970s. She then worked part-time at the Eureka Bakery until 1987. Her husband died Feb. 10, 1989. She continued to make Eureka her home. On Dec. 20, 2005, she entered Avera Eureka Health Care Center. Selma's time spent at home was always very enjoyable for her. She looked forward to her monthly outings with her widowed friends. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ at Eureka. Survivors include three sons, Scott Kary of Eureka, Vaughn (Holly) Kary of Aberdeen and Drake (Diane) Kary of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Austin (Tina) Kary, Elizabeth Kary and Max Kary; one great-grandson, Alex; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Logan and Taylor. Her parents, husband and one brother, Elmer Hagel, preceded her in death. Casketbearers will be Austin Kary, Elizabeth Kary, Melvin Kary, Roland Kary, Stanley Schaffer and Delmar Metzger. The organist and soloist will be Willis Kiesz. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka have been entrusted with arrangements. Published in the Aberdeen News on 11/5/2006.
