Randolph Times newspaper March 24, 1910 DEATH AT RIPE OLD AGE Salvatius Thelen, the aged father of Mrs. T. Messman and Anton Thelen northeast of town, died last Thursday night at the ripe old age of 93 years. Death came as a result of the infirmaties of old age. "Servatius Thelen was born at Eschbach, in the Rhine country of Germany 93 years ago. Here it was he was married and lived until he was 43 years old. He believed that America offered inducements for himself and family and in 1867 he came to this country and settled in Mills county, Iowa. he moved Shelby county, Ia., 24 years ago. His wife died 26 years ago. Fourteen years ago he came to Randolph. "The following children are left to mourn the death of their aged father: Mrs. Messman of Randolph; Peter Thelen of Shelby county, Iowa, and Anton Thelen of Randolph. Two daughters who have died are Mrs. Katherine Trapp of Sioux county, Iowa, and Mrs. Anna Pauli of Shelby county, Iowa. The funeral was held Monday at St. Frances Catholic church and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. --- Randolph Enterprise newspaper March 25, 1910 (Pg. 1) GRIM REAPER IS BUSY Thursday of last week, Servase Thelen died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Messman, at the age of 92 years. He was born in Germany and came to America in 1867 settling in Mills County, Iowa. Four teen years later he moved to Shelby County, where he lived until 1901, when he came to Randolph and has since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Mary Messman. He leaves two sons, Anton living north of this city, and Peter of Shelby County, Iowa, and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Messman, two daughters, Mrs. Catherine Trapp and Mrs. Annie Powley having preceded him into the great beyond. The funeral was held from St. Frances Catholic Church at 9 a.m. Monday and the remains laid to rest in the St. Frances Cemetery. --- Contributor: Marthann Kohl-Fuhs
