He was born in Lee Center, Oneida couty, New York, October 24, 1837, and is a son of Asa and Hannah (Cornish) Adams, also natives of that locality, where the father worked as a tanner and currier. In 1854 the family moved to Aurora, Kane county, Illinois, and in the following year to Bremer county, Iowa, locating on a farm in Douglas township. Eight years later the parents moved to Oregon, where both passed away. Seth D. Adams came with his parents to Iowa in 1855 and resided here continuously until 1862, when he returned to New York for his marriage. With his wife he came again to Douglas township, this county, and there lived until the spring of 1877, when he went to Portland, Oregon. In the fall of that year he returned home and in the spring of 1878 moved to Frederika, where he engaged in the mercantile business, with which he has since been connected. Throughout the years which have followed his business has increased steadily in volume and importance and he has become firmly established as a reliable, progressive and straightforward merchant, whose commercial methods will bear the closest investigation and scrutiny. He controls today a representative patronage and is classed among the leading business men of the city. In New York, on the 1st of January, 1863, Mr. Adams was united to marriage to Miss Abby A. Pratt, a native of that city, and they became the parents of seven children, three of whom survive, as follows: J.J., a merchant of Frederika; Lizzie, the wife of Albert Gillett, of Frederika; and William, also engaged in the mercantile business in that city. Mr. Adams has survived his wife many years, her death having occurred about the year 1881. Mr. Adams has affiliated with the democratic party since casting his vote and he has always been intelligently interested in public affairs. He served as postmaster of Frederika for four years during President Cleveland's administration and his record reflected credit upon his ability and public spirit. He is one of the pioneers in Bremer county and can remember when the cradle and scythe were used for cutting grain, which was threshed by being tramped out on the ground by horses and oxen. At that time McGregor, Iowa, one hundred and fifty miles away, was the nearest market and five or six days were required for the journey. Mr. Adams has watched the development of this frontier district into one of the most prosperous communities in the state and has himself borne an active and honorable part in the work of advancement. He has become widely and favorably known and has a large and representative circle of friends within the borders of Bremer county.
