Hill, Late Deputy Sheriff and Assistant Superintendent at Girls Industrial Home at Delaware Laid at Rest on Friday ------------------------------------------------------ Prevailing weather conditions constituted a handicap which made the holding of the funeral of the late Seth G. Hill at Hartsgrove Friday morning almost an impossibility. The funeral director who came from Orwell was unable to bring his funeral car with him on account of the bad roads and the casket was borne to the cemetery in an ambulance. School was dismissed at New Lyme Institute where a daughter of the deceased was an instructor and the teachers from there walked ten miles across the country to Hartsgrove to attend the funeral, walking being much easier than driving or riding. The obsequies which were held at the late home were largely attended despite the muddy roads and were conducted by the Rev. Mr. Moody of Hiram. Singing was by the Nye quartet. The pall bearers were brothers-in-law and nephews of the deceased, and interment was made in the Hartsgrove cemetery. The floral tokens were many and beautiful and embraced among other designs from the faculty at N.L.I., the students at N.L.I., Treasurer R. E. Harper, Capt. A.W. Stiles, and an exquisite piece from the Girls' Industrial Home at Delaware. Mr. Hill was one of the most prominent residents of the county, throughout which he was well known. He was born in Madison, August 18, 1827 and had resided on the farm in Hartsgrove for more than fifty-five years. He was deputy sheriff of Ashtabula County for eight years from 1879 to 1887 under Sheriffs A. W. Stiles and R. W. Baldwin, and in 1895 accepted a position at the Industrial Home at Delaware under Capt. Stiles. He remained there until 1904 when his health necessitated his resignation. He was universally esteemed and respected at Delaware and much regret expressed on his severing his relations there. He had been gradually breaking down for some time and finally contracted bronchial trouble. Shortly before the end he suffered a stroke of paralysis and did not regain consciousness. He died Wednesday. Mr. Hill married first Miss Mahalia Holcomb, who preceded him in death. His second wife was Miss Caroline Morris of Windsor, who survives him as does also one daughter, Miss Ida who is a member of the faculty at New Lime Institute. A niece, Mrs. Charles S. Dorman of Ashtabula and three nephews at Eagleville are the only other living relatives.
