His father had abandoned the family when Sevarre was just 5 years old. By the age of 24 in 1899, he had worked for 10 years as a pharmacy clerk in Centralia/Wisconsin Rapids, WI. He had gone to Superior and passed the state boards for pharmacy, and decided to move to Billings, Montana to work in his brother-in-law's pharmacy. Severe was so highly thought of in town that many prominent townsmen threw him a grand going away party on Thursday December 7, 1899, complete with a sumptuous meal, speeches, and the presentation to him of a small diamond ring, and a rousing song at the end. Severe came to Montana as a young adult, along with a sister, Estella "Stella", who had preceded him, and a brother John C. Belanger who came later. Severe's sister Stella M. married Dr. Portus Baxter, who owned a drugstore, and who employed his brother-in-law Severe before Severe opened his own drugstore. Severe operated a drugstore called Belanger and Jones in Billings, Montana until his death in 1932. His wife Stella Francis ran a beauty parlor. Severe and Stella apparently had only one child, a son, John V. (or B.) Belanger, who was born around 1910. Their home address may have been the 100 block of Terry Ave., Billings. Severe died in 1932 at just 56 years of age, of probable heart disease, when his son was 22. In the 1935 directory Stella is living with her son John B., and in the 1940 directory she is alone. In 1942 she remarried, to O. Henry. She lived until 1951. In the 1935 Billings phone directory, Severe's younger brother John C. and his wife Mary and their 14-15 year old teenage son John S. are living at a separate address from Mary Jane McCormick Belanger.
