"The Osceola Sentinel" Osceola, Iowa April 25, 1968 page 7 "Bert Austin Keeler" Bert Austin Keeler, was born June 2, 1947, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa. He received his education in the Clarke Community Schools where he was graduated in 1965. While in school he participated in Boy Scouts, 4-H, and high school athletics. Early in his life he gave himself into the keepng of the Christ and became a member of the Christian Church, at Weldon, Iowa. On November 4, 1965, he enlisted in the United States Army and in May of 1966 was sent to South Korea. In February of 1968, he volunteered for active duty in South Vietnam and while there advanced to the rank of Sergeant. He was attached to the Armored Division of the Fifth Calvary. On March 30, 1968, he died defending his country and his convictions. He is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Keeler, of Weldon, Iowa; his sisters, Joyce Branson, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and Jean Houston of West Des Moines, Iowa; a brother, Warren Keeler of Ogdon, Iowa; his grandmother, Mrs. Elma Wallace of Burbank, California and numerous other relatives and friends. Bert loved and enjoyed life to the fullest and was always looking forward and planning for new experiences. His presence was a pleasure to those who knew and loved him. His belief in God and in man's right of freedom, his love for county, family and his fellow man caused him to volunteer for Viet Nam where he was killed in combat action by small arms fire near Quang Tri, South Viet Nam on March 30, 1968. His passing leaves a great emptiness although we know he is with God. Services were conducted April 10, 1968, by Tom Helmick, Pastor of the Weldon Christian Church and interment was at the Green Bay Cemetery."
