On 07 December 2010, JLB provided the following information; Funeral services will be held at Lyndhurst Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock for Sergeant Clyde Finter Thompson, U. S. Marine Corps, who died in Long Beach, California, Naval Hospital Monday, July 5, at 4:30 a.m. of injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile while crossing a highway near Long Beach. Rev. C. F. Moseley, pastor of Basic Methodist Church, will have charge of the service in the church assisted by the Rev. J. G. Patton, D. D., pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Body will not be viewed at the church. Services at the grave will be in charge of Waynesboro's two veterans organizations - Griffith-Newman Post 131, American Legion, and Waynesboro Post 2424, Veterans of Foreign Wars. D. L. Humphreys will be in charge as commander; Ernest M. East as chaplain; E. L. Lambert as officer of the day and Benj. Craig as bugler. Company 101 of the Virginia Protective service will furnish a ceremonial firing squad. Active pallbearers will include John H. Ellis, J. V. Palmer, J. Stuart Koiner, W. D. Shumate, J. Guy Rusmiselle and W. D. Miller. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the VFW and American Legion, members of Waynesboro police force, Dr. R. S. Griffith, Harry Nash, Harry Kekes, T. R. (Mose) Allamong, John Anderson, Clarence Brownlee, G. H. Branaman, T. O. Tench, James Wilson, H. W. Floyd, A. Rosenthal and Herman Painter. Body shipped from Los Angeles last Friday night is scheduled to arrive tomorrow (Wednesday) morning and will be taken to the Thompson home at Lyndhurst. The Marine Corps is providing an escort. Sgt. Thompson was one of the first Augusta County boys to enlist in the service following news of the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. He and his brother, Nelson O. Thompson, Jr., enlisted early on the morning of December 8, 1941, and went to Parris Island, South Carolina, for training. Sgt. Thompson was there for 15 months, going later to New River, North Caroling, for three weeks advanced training and thence to San Diego, California, about two weeks ago. He advanced rapidly at Parris Island and held numerous medals and awards of the Marine Corps. He served for many months as a drill instructor, having been picked for this assignment because of his manly height and build and his fine voice. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. N. O. Thompson of Lyndhurst; two children, Shirley Ann, 8, and Clydie Louise, four sisters, Mrs. Nellie Moses, Miss Robert Thompson, Mrs. Anna Arthur and Mrs. Hulda Arthur, all of Lyndhurst; and four brothers, Sgt. Arthur Thompson, U. S. Army; Cpl. Nelson O. Thompson, Jr., U. S. Marine Corps, Aubra Thompson, of Lyndhurst; and Billie Thompson, at home. Also surviving are five nieces and two nephews. News that Sgt. Thompson met his death as a result of being struck by a car while crossing a highway was contained in a letter received by Mrs. Thompson from Major William J. Platten, U. S.
