Barnes. At the end of five days’ illness from pneumonia, David L. Barnes, for thirty-six years a resident of Chico, passed away at his home, Eighth and Olive streets, Sunday morning at 10 o’clock. David Laurence Barnes was born near Geneva, Ontario county, New York, September 22, 1842. He received his early education in New York State and became a painter, which vocation he followed during the remainder of his life. In 1861 he was married to Isabelle T. Gosman, who survives him. Deceased saw four years’ service in the Civil War, and received a bullet in one foot. He was first sergeant in Company D, 148th New York Volunteers. At the close of the war Mr. Barnes went back to his New York home and with his wife removed to California in 1872, first locating in Marysville, where he remained two months, after which he removed to Chico, which was his home until death. Mr. Barnes was a member of Halleck Post, G.A.R., of this city, a charter member of the Knights of Pythias, and also a member of the Pythian Sisters and the Master Builders’ Association. Surviving are the widow and one daughter, the latter, Mrs. John Allen of this city. William and Thomas Barnes, brothers engaged in banking and farming, reside in New York. Mr. Barnes made a comfortable living during his life in this city, and owned at the time of his death the home at the corner of Eighth and Olive streets and three cottages on Seventh street, between Orient and Olive. The funeral will be held this afternoon at 3 p.m. from the Pythian Castle, corner Sixth and Broadway, under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias. The funeral will be attended in bodies by the Knights of Pythias, and the G.A.R. Rev. L.R. Fulmer of the First M.E. Church, Rev. G.L. Lobdell of the Christian Church and Rev. A.B. Murphy of the Baptist Church will officiate. Mr. Barnes was not a man to make acquaintance quickly, but once a friend acquired he held them. He was charitable toward his fellow men and was for many years one of the leaders of Pride of Butte Lodge Knights of Pythias, and was a most faithful worker. ~~~~ Chico Record, Wednesday, June 3, 1908, pg 5 col 4: Remains of D.L. Barnes At Rest. Benefitting tribute to the memory of the late David L. Barnes was paid yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock when the funeral was held from Pythian Castle, Sixth and Broadway. The Pythian service prevailed at the hall. Rev. A.B. Murphy, pastor of the Baptist Church, offered the prayer, and a song was rendered by a quartette composed of Mrs. Ada Henry, Mrs. D. Matheson, J.F. Taggart and F.M. Washburn. Mrs. Henry also sang a solo, and the eulogy was delivered by Rev. G.L. Lobdell of the Christian Church. Rev. L.R. Fulmer of the First M.E. Church also took part in the services. In the procession to the cemetery were members of the Knights of Pythias, the G.A.R., the W.R.C., Phythian Sisters, and the Master Builders’ Association. At the grave the burial services of the Knights of Pythias and the Grand Army of the Republic were held.
