Vol. ****** The 1860 census says he was born in Maryland, the 1885 Kansas census claims Pennsylvania, and a well constructed Ancestry.com family tree and the 1870 census say Scotland. (b. @1858), James Donald (b. 12/29/59), Robert (b. @1863), Anna (b. @1866), William F. (b. 08/??/67), Lydia M. (b. 08/24/70 - married Frank W. Cobb), Harry Marion (b. 12/19/72), John Warren (b. 02/16/75), Mary Catherine (b. 07/05/78 - married Franklin S. Hawk), Donald MacDonald Jr. (b. 03/17/79), Margaret A. (b. 03/03/82), and Edward E. (b. 01/06/84). In 1860, he was a stone cutter living in Columbia. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Columbia August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Lancaster August 12 as a private with Co. K, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry. On October 1, he was detached to hospital duty, serving as a cook, and re-detached to the division quartermaster department on February 24, 1863. At muster-out, the army deducted $2.99 from his final pay for "difference in cost of clothing," a financial hit levied upon most of the men in the regiment. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia March 19, 1864, as 1st sergeant of Co. B, 91st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 10, 1865. Inexplicably, he has no pension for the 135th Pennsylvania but does for the 91st Pennsylvania, and there seems little doubt that the same man served both of these enlistments. By 1870, he was living with his family in Black Hawk, Rock Island County, Illinois, and was residing in Kansas by no later than 1885. Given that his son Donald MacDonald is a junior, the elder Donald's middle name may also have been MacDonald.He stood 5' 6" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.
