Raised and educated in the area, he graduated from St. John's High School in 1942. Dorance attended the University of Iowa until entering the United States Army where he served from 1944 to 1946 when he was honorably discharged. Dorance and Patricia E. Gaffney joined in marriage on April 17, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Their union blessed them with seven children. Together they farmed east of Ryan until 1968 when they moved to Manchester. Dorance also worked at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Tredegar in Manchester, and for the Delaware County Environmental Department over the years. At age eighty-two, Dorance died after a brief illness Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester. Dorance was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Ryan American Legion. He will be remembered as one who enjoyed card clubs and loved being with family. Survivors include his wife Patricia of Manchester; seven children: Susan (David) Brown of Stanwood, Patrick (Diane) Oehler of Cedar Falls, Michael Oehler of Marion, Stephen Oehler of Winthrop, Ellen (Anthony "Grover") Goldsmith of Manchester, Mark (Lynn) Oehler of Cedar Rapids, and Chris (Brenda) Oehler of Cedar Rapids; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Barbara) Oehler, of Lakewood, Colorado; and one sister, Dorothy (Richard) Morrissey, of Denver, Colorado. His parents and brother, Raymond, preceded Dorance in death.
