Highland Recorder March 6, 1897 Death of E. V. Ervine We regret very much to learn of the death of Mr. E. V. Ervine, which occurred on Wednesday, at his home on the Cowpasture in this county. Mr. Ervine had been ill for sometime, and for several days the family had little hops of his recovery. Mr. Ervine was honored and respected by all who knew him, and in his death the county loses a valuable citizen. During the war he was a gallant soldier on the side of the Confederacy, serving as a sergeant in Company ‘‘B” of the noted 31st Virginia Regiment. He carefully preserved the roll of his company, and at its last reunion, which was held at McDowell in honor of Capt. Lyman, he was present and called the roll, and imparted to his surviving comrades much valuable information in connection with it. Mr. Ervine had a bible which he treasured more than all his war relics, because it saved his life. In the cover of the book, which he was carrying in his pocket during a battle, can be seen the depression made by the(mini) ball which, had it not struck the book, would have killed him. Highland Recorder May 30, 1896 One Big Bear For the last three weeks there was a very large bear on Shaw’s Ridge killing somebody’s sheep every night, and to destroy the destroyer had been the interest of every one. Previous to May 25, we had planned and organized a second hunt, a first having failed .... in a short distance he came upon Dave Rexrode who had just arrived, and not having had time to hitch his horse, both horse and bear became frightened. This turned the bear, horse and dogs, and all came in a pile to E. V. ERVINE who fired the final hit. Mr. Hoover and Mr. Clark Leach came upon Bruin lying in his bed too sick to proceed. Mr. Geo. Hooke’s team was procured and the animal was hauled away. The bear weighed 359 pounds after dissection.
