Eugene Joseph Belgarde, 88, born to parents Henry Joseph Belgarde and Violet Williams on May 23, 1924, died on July 20, 2012, from complications with pneumonia. Born at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, dad was raised by his grandmother. He attended school in Great Falls. Dad was proud to serve his country and joined the Army at the age of 16, serving in the 163rd Infantry. He fought in Korea and World War II, from which he received a Purple Heart and was a decorated sergeant. Dad married Lilly (Red) Fellows. They had a daughter, Lana and son, Barry. Barry died shortly after birth. Dad and Lilly later divorced. Dad later married Joanne McNeil and they had four children. After 25 years they were divorced, but were good friends during the two years prior to dad's death. Dad completed an apprenticeship for auto mechanics in 1955. Residing in Butte, dad worked at Firestone and later the Berkeley Pit until its closure in 1982. He then relocated to Tooele, Utah for a while before retiring, at which time he moved back to Butte. An avid fisherman and duck hunter, he rarely came home empty-handed because he knew "how to sneak up on the fish." His sons inherited the gift for taking the fish by surprise and were all into fishing heaven while roaming through the waters of Rock Creek. We daughters did not have the knack for staying silent in the water. Dad had the natural ability to play the piano by ear and could sing quite well. He loved jazz music and was listening to it the night before he went home. Flying was a passion for dad. He often flew with Monte during airmail flights. Those times of thrills and chills held special memories for dad. Gene is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law and his sons and daughters-in-law, Lana (James) Hill, Paula (John) Reid, Lynda (Jeremiah) Wigginton , Peter Belgarde and Debbie Krankowski, Dana Belgarde and Aleta Bauer, Monte (Ronda) Belgarde; grandchildren, Chantal, Nicholas, Andrea, Star Rae, Elisha, Deseree, Heidi and Barry; and nine great-grandchildren. Gene was preceded in death by his father, Henry; mother, Violet; grandmother; sister, Alice; son, Barry; and stepdaughter, Vina. Cremation has taken place and there will be a 21-gun salute at Fort Harrison to honor Dad's military contribution with a private get-together for the family afterwards. Special thanks go to Lana Hill and Joanne Belgarde for all their help and support during the time of dad's illness.
