Veteran Called to Eternal Home Summons Comes Without Warning to Veteran of Civil War The _____ of death sounded Thursday morning for Harvey Smith, Civil War veteran, the fatal stroke coming without warning whatsoever, while he was sitting in his chair at his home. For some years Mr. Smith had been a partial invalid and depended on his friends who drive cars, to carry him to church on Sunday mornings and downtown when business matters made a trip necessary. He was a caller in the Union office not more than two weeks ago, a privilege enjoyed at intervals during the years of Mr. Smith's residence in West Union. Harvey Smith was a native of Maine, Franklin county, and came with his parents to Butler county, Iowa, in the 50's. He walked the distance from his home to Waterloo to enlist on October 12, 1861. An account of Mrs. Smith's Civil War experiences as a private have been running for four months in this paper and that part relating to his arrival in Libby Prison, at Richmond, Va., was published last week. Mr. Smith was mustered out at Memphis, Tenn., January 20, 1866. When Robert Anderson Post G.A.R. was organized in Waterloo, November 21, 1881, Harvey Smith was named adjuntant and in 1883 served as it's commander. Of the twenty-eight charter members all are now dead. Mr. Smith retained his interest in Robert Anderson Post and never transferred his membership from it. He was a resident of Waterloo for twenty-three years, associated with his brother in the coal and wood business, but later went to Sible Butte, ND (only one I could find was Sibley Butte Twp., in Burleigh Co.) where he was fortunate in a business way by operating a sheep ranch (late 1890's?-1909). He came to West Union, Fayette Co., in 1909 and engaged in the grocery business in the building now used as a hospital. After his retirement he served as justice of the peace and as elder of the Bethel Presbyterian church of which he was a devoted member, giving liberally to all its activites. Mr. Smith was twice married. While home on furlough he was married to Miss Ellen L. Benight on April 13, 1864. Mrs. Smith died during the winter of 1916, while she and Mr. Smith were sojourning in Florida. On May 8, 1917, he was married to Miss Sarah Stearns of this city, who survives him. Funeral services were held at the home Monday morning at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. J.C. Krebs, late pastor of Bethel Presbyterian church of West Union, who came from his mother's house in Galena, Ill., to officiate at the services for his late parishioner. Following the services here, the body was taken to Waterloo where Black Hawk Lodge, I.O.O.F. and Robert Anderson Post had charge of the burial at the grave in the old Waterloo Cemetery by the side of his first wife. A firing squad composed of American Legion members fired a last salute. Mr. Smith had been a member of the I.O.O.F. continuously since 1870 and was presented with a fifty-year jewel eleven years ago. Those going with the body were Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Probert, J.E. Fitch and Miss Lydia Fitch, Miss Nellie Kelly of Chicago and undertaker Burnham. Mrs. Smith was unable to make the trip, having been under doctor's care for some days previous to her husband's death.
