JohnsonDecember 14, 1919 - July 23, 2011 Howard Johnson, Sioux Falls, SD, died July 23, 2011, in Sioux Falls. He was 91. Howard W. Johnson was born December 14, 1919 in Crooks, SD, to Elmer and Emma (Anderson) Johnson. He was raised in the area and had attended schools in Crooks and Lyons. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1938. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942. Serving in New Guinea and the Philippines, Howard was a Purple Heart Recipient and received the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Service Arrowhead, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged as a Platoon Sargent in 1945. Howard was united in marriage to Eunice Nesheim on February 8, 1947, in Sioux Falls. The couple farmed in rural Crooks until 1957, when they moved to Sioux Falls. He began his career with John Morrell and Company where he worked in the Grading Room. Howard retired in 1982, after 25 years of service to the company. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the VFW, and the American Legion. He enjoyed helping friends and neighbors, and in his free time, liked spending time outdoors working on his lawn and planting flower gardens. In recent years, Howard moved to the Inn on Westport, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with all his friends there. Grateful for having shared his life are many nieces, nephews and other relatives. In addition to his wife, Eunice, Howard was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Olive Finch, Helen Ostergren, and Dorothy Hiner; and brothers, Carl Johnson and Clarence Johnson. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Hills of Rest Memorial Park. Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday.
