Description	:	Jacob Sauer was born at Nordheim, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Francis and Marianna Sauer. His family immigrated to America in about 1847. They settled at Fort Adams, Rhode Island. There, both Jacob and his father enlisted in the US Army on October 1, 1848. His enlistment age was listed as age 13 and height 4'10'' but it appears he was only 11 and may have lied in order to enlist. Both father and son were musicians in the US Army 3rd Artillery Regiment. In December 1853, they both survived the disastrous sinking... Read More	Jacob Sauer was born at Nordheim, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Francis and Marianna Sauer. His family immigrated to America in about 1847. They settled at Fort Adams, Rhode Island. There, both Jacob and his father enlisted in the US Army on October 1, 1848. His enlistment age was listed as age 13 and height 4'10'' but it appears he was only 11 and may have lied in order to enlist. Both father and son were musicians in the US Army 3rd Artillery Regiment. In December 1853, they both survived the disastrous sinking of the steamship "San Francisco" that had left New York City on December 21, 1853 on its maiden voyage bound for San Francisco, California with 718 passengers and crew aboard. The ship was chartered by the U.S. government to transport eight companies of the U.S. Army's 3rd Artillery Regiment and other officers to the West Coast of the United States. Less than 36 hours out of port, the ship encountered strong gales as it headed south. By Christmas morning, the seas were strong enough to sweep the superstructure containing the main saloon and 160 soldiers over the side. The "San Francisco" floundered for three days, during which time more than 60 additional passengers succumbed to fever and an outbreak of cholera. Its approximate location was about 400 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. On December 28, the "Kilby," a commercial ship, arrived and rescued 100 survivors but had no room for more as it was a much smaller ship. A week later, on January 5, two more ships arrived — the "Three Bells" and the "Antarctic" — and rescued the remaining 398 passengers, after which the "San Francisco" sank. See an artist's depiction of the event at left. Pvt. Jacob Sauer was rescued by the "Antarctic" and his father, Cpl. Francis Sauer was rescued by the "Three Bells." Although no mention of Francis' wife and other children is found, it is likely that Francis' wife Mary Ann and their younger children were also on board and survived. Jacob and his family continued on to The Presidio at San Francisco. Jacob's military career as a musician with the 3rd Battalion included posts at Vancouver, Washington Territory in 1858, and San Francisco circa 1860. It appears that he married Elizabeth Large in about 1861. They had a daughter, Lizzie Sauer, in 1862, in Connecticut. Jacob re-enlisted with his regiment again on July 20 1863 at Fort Trumbull Connecticut. On August 12, he tragically died in a drowning accident at the fort.
